About This Pipe
Brazilian artisan Flávia Rodrigues began making pipes out of a need to be creative and received support in her endeavor from her partner and fellow countryman Gustavo Cunha of marTelo. Her influences include Tom Eltang, Paolo Becker, Hans "Former" Nielsen, and Chris Asteriou and tends to make traditional shapes with Danish shaping cues and accent materials native to Brazil.
Flávia went with horn for the accent of this bent Dublin, which features a straight aft that is canted lightly forward in traditional Dublin style and a fore that is composed completely of the perfectly round arc of the underside from the start of the heel up. Tight tendrils of flame grain decorate the walls of the bowl, all of it dressed with a dark walnut stain, and the rim is inflated and dressed with a generous helping of birdseye. The round shank flares outward as it nears the horn accent, which takes the shape of a ring, beyond which a dome of vulcanite yields to the lightly bent stem. It's a pipe of very fluid lines that are in consistent motion, particularly the sweeping underside that allows the conical bowl to maintain Dublin status while still bringing a sense of continuous momentum to the pipe.
