About This Pipe
Mike Sebastian Bay originally encountered Tom Eltang when looking for someone to repair his father's old pipes, but eventually secured an apprenticeship from the Danish artisan and joined his workshop in 2015. You can see considerable influence from Eltang in Mike's pipes, though he has certainly made a name for himself with his fine handiwork.
This bent Dublin of Mike's might be considered unconventional in profile, especially the wide, sweeping ovoid shank with light points on the flanks, but it's Mike's imagination that really makes this piece stand out in the crowd. The bowl is crowned with an inflated rim and light plateau around the chamber, with straight flame grain on the walls below finished smoothly and stretching back to briefly adorn the sides of the upturned shank. Birdseye dresses the top and bottom of the shank reaching back to the asymmetrical shoulders of the vulcanite saddle stem, which bends only lightly back to the bit. It's handsomely finished, ingeniously imagined, and a great addition to any collection.
