About This Pipe

Johannes "Suhr" Rasmussen's journey into pipe making is a continuation of a legacy. The grandson of legendary artisans Poul Rasmussen and Anne Julie, Suhr inherited both the lineage and passion of pipe craftsmanship at an early age, crafting his first pipe at just eight years old. Under the mentorship of Tom Eltang, a master in his own right, Suhr honed the technical finesse of artisan pipe making, and over time has cultivated a style of his own.

Suhr's work possesses the refined styling often associated with Danish pipe making, though there are a few attributes that help characterize his approach. Among them is a tendency toward gracefully canted bowls set at the fore of an upswept shank and stem combination. While this isn't true of all his work, it's a knack within his craftsmanship that makes for some impressive pieces, with a strong sense of linework throughout. This Acorn is a fine example, showcasing the graceful curvature and thoughtful shaping that help distinguish Suhr's work.

An alluring aspect of this piece is the rendering of the bowl, which remains true to the Acorn shape while incorporating some extra substance around the upper walls. Along with its gracefully canted poise, soft paneling along the fore wall suggests the implied arc that runs through the lifted heel and into the flowing curvature of the shank and stem. In contrast, the aft of the bowl takes on a softer contour, creating a pleasing juxtaposition with the more defined shaping at the fore. The stummel is finished smooth in one of Suhr's handsome mahogany stains, highlighting fine birdseye along the rim and tendrils of flame grain along the bowl's flanks. The junction is accented with a band of horn, adding a cool-toned contrast to the warmth of the briar and completing the composition.
