About This Pipe Tobacco

Now in its fourth generation of producing fine pipe tobaccos, the Stokkebye family tradition began with Erik Peter Stokkebye, born in 1855, and continues to this day with bespoke blends, many paying homage to important dates in their family history.

The 1989 Max Erik blend is a special release from the Danish brand, and has been named in honor of the birth year of Max Erik, Erik Stokkebye's son. This addition is representative of the 5th generation which will eventually lead the company, looking toward the future's possibilities and celebrating the continuation of the family's craft. The blend comprises a combination of ripe Virginia tobaccos from Georgia and the Carolinas which have been pressed into cakes for a week before being sliced into flakes. Delicious and subtly sweet, 1989 is sure to appeal to enthusiasts of pure Virginia blends crafted with care.

My New Go-To Summer Blend
July 02, 2026
Product: Erik Stokkebye 4th Generation Max Erik 1989 1.75oz
Ever since Sutliff 507C disappeared, I searched far and wide for a in-production replacement to smoke this summer in the heat. I can gladly say that search has ended. 1989 fits the bill.

Grassy, tangy, mild and sweet. An all day, not overly complicated, straightforward virginia flake. Easier
on the wallet at this tin price point. Big aging potential too. This is worth a try, even to throw a tin in the cellar to pop a decade from now....Read More
Awesome at the price point

Product: Erik Stokkebye 4th Generation Max Erik 1989 1.75oz
A nice flake Virginia. Nothing to write home about, but what do you expect at the price. Nonetheless, good to have around.

Flakes are easily cubed and gravity fed. Smoke it slow for greatest enjoyment. For me, a good conversation tobacco as there weren't all the nuances of other, albeit mor
e expensive, pure VA flakes. Great for breaking in pipes....Read More
My Birth Year Tobacco and a sleeper tobacco.
June 03, 2026
Product: Erik Stokkebye 4th Generation Max Erik 1989 1.75oz
I was attracted to this tobacco because it is my birth year. I was surprised by this tobacco. I tried other straight Virgina blends and they tasted bland to me. It has a nice sweetness. The flakes look nice when you open up the tin. You can not beat this price for a tin. It will be in my regular rotation....Read More
Very good Virginia blend

Product: Erik Stokkebye 4th Generation Max Erik 1989 1.75oz
This is a surprisingly good Va blend. Surprisingly because of the price point. You can't beat a quality tin of tobacco for under $10. Now, is it Capstan Blue good? No, but its very similar in its flavor profiles, but the flavors just don't come through quite as strong. But again, for half the price of Capstan you can't go wrong with this blend if you enjoy straight Va blends....Read More
