About This Pipe Tobacco

Now in its fourth generation of producing fine pipe tobaccos, the Stokkebye family tradition began with Erik Peter Stokkebye, born in 1855, and continues to this day with bespoke blends, many paying homage to important dates in their family history.

The 1989 Max Erik blend is a special release from the Danish brand, and has been named in honor of the birth year of Max Erik, Erik Stokkebye's son. This addition is representative of the 5th generation which will eventually lead the company, looking toward the future's possibilities and celebrating the continuation of the family's craft. The blend comprises a combination of ripe Virginia tobaccos from Georgia and the Carolinas which have been pressed into cakes for a week before being sliced into flakes. Delicious and subtly sweet, 1989 is sure to appeal to enthusiasts of pure Virginia blends crafted with care.

Very good Virginia blend

This is a surprisingly good Va blend. Surprisingly because of the price point. You can't beat a quality tin of tobacco for under $10. Now, is it Capstan Blue good? No, but its very similar in its flavor profiles, but the flavors just don't come through quite as strong. But again, for half the price of Capstan you can't go wrong with this blend if you enjoy straight Va blends....Read More

I’m fortunate to have access to pretty much every new pipe tobacco that comes to market and while these are often very good and highly enjoyable it’s rare for a blend to earn a permanent spot in my rotation. Certain blends (Steamworks) would be mainstays if not for their limited availability. After several tins of 4th Gen Max Erik 1989 I can say that it has earned a permanent spot and I’m very pleased it’s priced well and regularly available. This is one of those rare blends that’s satisfying at all times of day, and on any occasion. Mostly zesty, bready, with notes of citrus and a very balanced sweetness, there is some complexity and evolution of flavor throughout the smoke for those who pay carefully attention to packing and puffing cadence, this is also just comfortable and easy to enjoy. Pairs well with coffee, spirits ranging from dry and floral to smoky and sweet, iced tea, or a cold Pilsner. It’s versatile and will age phenomenally (I’ve actually been finding the mild-medium Virginia flakes to have longer legs than some of the stronger, richer ones). I’ll be cellaring deep....Read More
