Erik Stokkebye 4th Generation: Max Erik 1989 1.75oz Pipe Tobacco

Product Number: 003-553-0028

Now in its fourth generation of producing fine pipe tobaccos, the Stokkebye family tradition began with Erik Peter Stokkebye, born in 1855, and continues to this day with bespoke blends, many paying homage to important dates in their family history.

The 1989 Max Erik blend is a special release from the Danish brand, and has been named in honor of the birth year of Max Erik, Erik Stokkebye's son. This addition is representative of the 5th generation which will eventually lead the company, looking toward the future's possibilities and celebrating the continuation of the family's craft. The blend comprises a combination of ripe Virginia tobaccos from Georgia and the Carolinas which have been pressed into cakes for a week before being sliced into flakes. Delicious and subtly sweet, 1989 is sure to appeal to enthusiasts of pure Virginia blends crafted with care.

I’m fortunate to have access to pretty much every new pipe tobacco that comes to market and while these are often very good and highly enjoyable it’s rare for a blend to earn a permanent spot in my rotation. Certain blends (Steamworks) would be mainstays if not for their limited availability. After several tins of 4th Gen Max Erik 1989 I can say that it has earned a permanent spot and I’m very pleased it’s priced well and regularly available. This is one of those rare blends that’s satisfying at all times of day, and on any occasion. Mostly zesty, bready, with notes of citrus and a very balanced sweetness, there is some complexity and evolution of flavor throughout the smoke for those who pay carefully attention to packing and puffing cadence, this is also just comfortable and easy to enjoy. Pairs well with coffee, spirits ranging from dry and floral to smoky and sweet, iced tea, or a cold Pilsner. It’s versatile and will age phenomenally (I’ve actually been finding the mild-medium Virginia flakes to have longer legs than some of the stronger, richer ones). I’ll be cellaring deep....Read More
Bright sweet, and pleasing

Product: Erik Stokkebye 4th Generation Max Erik 1989 1.75oz
8/17/23 Update- I have now finished an entire tin of this blend and have to say that it will likely go near the top of my list of go to tobaccos. This blend is very mild and sweet, it goes very well with early morning coffee. The tin note is one of the best I have ever come across and the room note solicits compliments. It has a very mild nicotine hit so it can be had before breakfast with no worries. Excellent Sweet Virginia.

Tin note has somewhat of a licorice smell to me, not lemon. This is fresh but it is very good without any age on it, I am sure it will get better with time. No issue with tongue bite. Reminds me a lot of Orlick Golden Sliced. My taste runs toward the brighter, sweeter blends so if that is your preference as well you should try this.

Outstanding straight virginia, light hay and citrus notes. This will be an excellent candidate for aging. And at around $9 a tin, you cannot beat the price!

Product: Erik Stokkebye 4th Generation Max Erik 1989 1.75oz
I gave this blend such a good review due to the fact that as far as a bright virginia goes, this IMO is one to reckon with. The tin note is as if someone squeezed a lemon onto a bail of hay. There's a slight bready quality to it as well. This blend I feel is perfect for those all day smokes during summer time. Refreshing, light, naturally alittle sweet. Solid bright va blend all around...Read More

Product: Erik Stokkebye 4th Generation Max Erik 1989 1.75oz
Just as the namesake of the blend this tobacco is young. Which is to be expected given even in the description it say “ripe Virginia”. I get more of the grass/hay and not so much of the citrus. If I’m reading the date right my tins were packaged 5/08/23. I bought 6 tins that I plan to sample every 5 years. I have completed faith in the Stokkebye clan that just like Max, great things are to come from this tobacco....Read More
Thin Flavor

Product: Erik Stokkebye 4th Generation Max Erik 1989 1.75oz
The price is great. The flavor is not so much. Sweet and citrusy but much like filling a glass half way with orange juice and then the other half water. Just too thin.
Go.
