bitter?
February 14, 2022
Product: Low Country Edisto 2oz
my regulars are primarily Orlik Golden Sliced and P.S. Luxury Navy Flake, which are more toward the brighter Va. flake side with more hay and grass with sweetness so this did not lean toward my preferred flavor profile.

d a lot of paper, the tobacco is completely surrounded by paper but once you peel the two to layers back you find a smallish, moist flake that crumbles easily. the note of the fresh tobacco is a pleasant bread aroma. the moisture level would indicate drying time but i did not allow for any on my first bowl. this rubs out about as easy as any flake i have ever encountered which makes packing very easy. the initial light does not offer any hint of the natural Va. sweetness that i look for and i did not detect any throughout the bowl. most of the flavor seemed to me to be more on the bitter side, like vinegar on the tongue, but it was not totally unpleasant. i would say that the strength "3", room note "3", and flavor "3" profiles as listed were all on point. as the bowl progressed the flavor reached a point of being so bitter that it tasted like that bowl of tobacco that you pack, light, smoke partial, set down, and come back to hours later to relight. as for burn, i smoked this in a medium sized billiard without having to do a single relight. i will likely not order this again, it is not sweet or complex enough for me. i also did not reorder on C&D Carolina Red Flake because it was not on my flavor profile either- point being, if you like the CRF, you might like this. Instant Classic

Product: Low Country Edisto 2oz
I feel like the flavor strength is above medium. There is a sweetness that hits just right in my opinion, not syrupy but there and natural. Tangy, fruity, with no bite but there is a slight spiciness that only adds to its appeal.
Delicious!

This is a wonderful blend. I have been searching for a suitable replacement for Ye Olde Signe as Peterson, much to my chagrin, doesn’t seem to be showing any signs of reviving the blend anytime soon. Edisto checks very similar boxes for me: slightly ... Read More
sweet, bready, smooth, simple-yet-nuanced and a great candidate for aging. Edisto operates very nicely too, it took a modest number of relights and the moisture level was prefect right after rubbing out. Flakes are loose and broken and not quite as solid as you might expect from a traditional flake. I am likely to change my review to five stars in the future (I like to give a blend a year before I call it a five star blend).
I should also be specific, four stars can mean various things to different people so I like to define my terms. For me I attribute three stars to blends that are enjoyable and won’t be a waste of money however they are not blends I would add to my rotation. Four stars are excellent blends according to my judgement and worthy of smoking regularly, of adding to my rotation and perhaps of cellaring. Five stars are reserved for the greatest blends—my all time favorites. I can see Edisto becoming a five star blend for me especially after it has a few years to age. Read Less
Stands Up with the Best

Product: Low Country Edisto 2oz
Imagine all the qualities you look for in a quality, complex, and classic straight Virginia: they're all here in spades, with bells on, bellowing from the mountain top. I cracked the tin and the note immediately recalled for me my first B&M; thi... Read More
s is one of those blends that smells like a good pipe shop should smell. I went through the tin with a myriad of briars, a cob, and a clay, and it sits shoulder to shoulder with my Orlik, LTF, Carolina Red Flake, and even my beloved FVF. It's also going to age like a champ. Absolutely bloody delicious. Read Less
Great Red VA Flake

Product: Low Country Edisto 2oz
Now this is a good one. Classic C&D style flakes that rub out and pack extremely easily. Tin note is of fresh baked bread, moldering leaves, and a light sour fermented note that comes off as fresh fall apples. Lights instantly and stays lit, i... Read More
t’s got your classic red VA flavors right out of the tin. 5 stars as it does exactly what a straight red VA flake should and it does it well. Nothing out of left field here. If you’re a red VA fan it’s a no brainer. According the the sticker the tin that I’m currently smoking has been packaged for less than a month and it’s already great, so I can’t wait to see what it’s like in a few months. I ordered 5 tins for cellaring as well. Read Less
Another unsuccessful new mix from C&D

Product: Low Country Edisto 2oz
This is once again a blend I was pulled into by the chatter. Once again the tin note was good, some dark fruit, little hay, smelled intriguing. Once again the smoke itself started out ok, but then by the midway, the casing had burned off and the low ... Read More
quality leaf showed through. It’s these green young Virginias that are a common theme in all these new C&D blends. Windjammer was a similar experience for me. It’s the same thing EVERY TIME, “tobacco pressed and sliced into delicate flakes”. Same presentation, same young leaf with a different casing. I keep getting rooked in to trying these new releases and I’m let down every time. This will be the last time I buy a tin of these new blends. Read Less

Product: Low Country Edisto 2oz
If you like the stewed fruit, slightly spicy, rich taste of a red Virginia, this is among the best available. Packs easy, lights easy, burns easy. Rub it out or stuff and puff, it performs well either way. Capstan Blue has been my favorite Virginia b... Read More
ut this might unseat the mighty Capstan. Reminiscent of the original Carolina Red Flake, but smoother with less spice. A classic in the making. Read Less

This is a very good pipe tobacco. This is the blend that really got me to pay more attention to Virginia's. It is very good. tin note is sweet with plenty of dried fruit tones. It was a fantastic pipe session. Just good wholesome natural tobacco ... Read More

Nothing special here for me. Nothing disagreeable but it just doesn't satisfy the reasons I smoke.
Stoved 200°/300 minutes

Product: Low Country Edisto 2oz
Smooth top to bottom. Stoved 200°/300 minutes. Opened can to oatmeal cookie smell. Let stoved tobacco oxygenate and cool down for 30 minutes. Loaded a bowl, let it sit overnight, and jarred the rest after 30 minutes of oxygenation. It's even better i... Read More
n the humidor for short time, probably would age to great. It is smoother on top of bowl, so that aspect is an improvement. I mixed a 50/50 bowl of this Edisto and Mac Baren Old Dark Fired, and it is very good mix. Also mixed 50/50 on stoved Mac Baren Dark Twist. Both sessions I was able to get very relaxed and could separate the tastes easily. I like this for an comparatively inexpensive smoke to blend. I did same mix with Capstan and Mac Baren brands. This is a good value price point. I purchased five tins, and stoved another. Repeated the experiment successfully. It's deeelicious and affordable for mixing, or by iteself. I like the cut on it alot. Read Less
Product: Low Country Edisto 2oz
I ordered several tins based on the rapturous reception, but was quite disappointed with my initial encounters with the real thing. The tobacco is moist and the flakes are medium-fine, and the tin aroma is as you’d expect for a Virginia. The smoking ... Read More
was another matter: I found it quite harsh and thin tasting, with good texture to the smoke but little depth. I decided to “stove” it for 3 hours at 190 (F) and left it in the jar a few weeks. That made a world of difference. The flakes are rather darker now and the flavor much deeper and richer. I now get the malty, bready flavors that are to my taste. I may not order again, but if I do, I will certainly plan to age and/or stove this. Read Less
Delicious Virginia

Product: Low Country Edisto 2oz
This is the best Virginia I've tried in the past. As a Latakia supreme principle, I usually smoke only Balkans and English. It smokes as often as it does. It's less irritating and has a natural sweetness, so it's a pity that it's sold out even tho... Read More

Classic red Virginia flake

Product: Low Country Edisto 2oz
Just finished my first pipe full of this stuff. It's a classic red Virginia flag, to my taste, a little more to the tangy/sweet side then the bready side. Very tasty, and if they ever sell it in bulk, I will buy multiple pounds for the cellar.
