Good ole Americana

I hate it when elitist say things like “only good for a beginner“. Look, hundreds of thousands of men around the world who were - are “real pipe smokers” have literally smoked nothing other than Captain black, Sir Walter Raleigh, Amphora or Borkum Riff their entire lives. This is a classic American Aromatic. Decent taste fantastic room note. Sure it’s not some crazy expensive fancy tobacco by Esoterica or GLP but it was never meant to be. It’s meant to be enjoyable and budget friendly, and that it is. Not, everybody likes Virginia/Perique, straight Burley or English blends. Harping on or belittling someone for smoking Captain Black saying that they are not a “real pipe smoker” is akin to saying about someone who only drinks Coors light that they are not a real beer drinker. At the end of the day whatever pipe tobacco you enjoy smoking the most out of whichever pipe you enjoy smoking it is the best tobacco in the world. Don’t let the elitist and naysayers tell you otherwise. If you like this stuff smoke it and don’t listen to anybody else. After all they are not gonna smoke it for you. Full disclosure it’s not my favorite by any means but I also wouldn’t be upset if it was all I had on hand. Better than I expected!

What can I say that hasn’t already been said? This is captain black original after all, the white pouch aromatic that everyone has at least tried once. I waited until I was about 2 years into my pipe-smoking endeavors to try this blend. I had heard other review’s online saying how “run of the mill” this blend was. That it’s not good and not bad either. As someone who only smokes cavendish forward aromatics, I was optimistic to give this blend a true shot. I got myself a 1.5 oz pouch from my local cigar shop and probably paid too much for it. I hear other smokers say how they can get this stuff at any of their local gas stations or drug stores. Not in my town. I was pleased to find that the pouch itself was sealed. After breaking the seal I stuck my nose down into the pouch and immediately got the smell of raisins, vanilla and chocolate. More than half of the blend is black cavendish with some small strands of Virginia and burley in the mix. A common ribbon cut. The cavendish wasn’t a heap of large chunks, which I like. The moisture was just a hair past too moist for me. I never transferred this blend over to a jar so by the time I got half way through the pouch the moisture was just right. This blend lights very easily. Great smoke volume and overall flavor. It wasn’t instant tongue bite like some people make out this blend to be. For the most part I got your typical black cavendish flavor with intertwining notes of vanilla, chocolate and some kind of dark fruit note like a date or plum. It can get a little hot if you puff too much towards the bottom of the bowl. The blend getting too hot will result with a burnt out ash like taste, that I feel higher quality aromatics don’t do. So.. no frills, nothing extravagant or mind blowing. Just a modest aromatic that is in all honesty, satisfying. I’m going to start using my experience with captain black original as a standard. If the blend I’m smoking is worse than captain black, don’t bother and get rid of it.
I don’t see myself buying more of this blend as I have stock piles and higher quality blends. But if I was stranded on an island and only had a pouch of captain black I wouldn’t be all that upset....Read More

Captain black. Honestly, this blend is pretty great for what it is. It’s a quintessential drugstore aromatic, but in the best way possible. What really impresses me about this blend is how well behaved it is. It’s so easy to light and keep lit, unlike some aromatics. It burns as well as any pipe tobacco. The flavor is sweet, mild, and satisfying. Naysayers will say it’s just hot air with a chemical flavor, but I disagree.
