About This Pipe Tobacco

For Peter Heinrich's Curly Special, rare Virginias are spun into "twist" then sliced to the size of small coins. Each disk is a complete blend. Costly to produce, this spun cut can be smoked for its slow burning classic Virginia flavor or mixed into a favorite blend for a change of pace.

I would have given this blend a 5.0 review if it was a little more readily available. I’m primarily a VaPer smoker and this blend is a nice one. It’s pretty much ready to go straight from the tin, I do tend to air it out a bit probably out of habit. The small coins are easy to work with and handle. I get a citrus and hay taste from it, along with a little bit of fermentation from the perique. I have found that with a little time in the cellar the smooth flavor is enhanced. The oldest I have is about a year so I’m curious to see how more time resting will affect the flavor. I said all of that to say this, I like it, a lot. Also, a good manufacturing code for being able to know the age of the tins would be handy as socks on a rooster. That’s handy, keeps his toes from getting cold....Read More

If it wasn't for price and availability, this would be my daily driver. As it stands, this stands atop for my favorite Virginia/Perique blends. It isn't off the walls complex or perhaps the most unique Va/Per you ever had. It is however well balanced, well behaved, and with a good character to stand on. If you enjoy Kopp Virginias, or Va/Pers generally, it will be familiar. However, I do find an intriguing dark and smokey nuance to it that almost reminds me of Dark Fired. I'm not saying it is, but it's quite a bit darker overall than you might expect....Read More

Tin note of barbeque, spices and musty vegetation. Tobacco is cut into thin 1/2-to-3/4-inch coins of yellowish tan and dark brown. Moisture content is great. Coins rub out with little effort. Burns slow with a few relights. The strength is medium and nic is mild to medium. No flavoring detected. Taste is medium and very consistent, with notes of grassy, zesty, oak smoky, herbal, spice, slight bitter, plum, spicy, acidic, peaty vegetation, wood, toast, dark dried fruit, floral, mild vinegary sour, mildly savory, a tart and tangy citrus background note, and a peppery retro. Virginias Flue-Cured and suspected Fire-Cured) are leading with Perique supporting. Room note is tolerable, and aftertaste is great....Read More

Yes this smells like DLF out of the tin, and the red an golden virginias look promising. But in a pipe and when lit; we're talking a whole new experience here! First of all. This stuff is loaded with peppery perique. Secondly and probably most important:it is a wicked, wicked clove-bomb! In DLF it was balanced and subdued during smoking, but in No 2, we're talking almost asian clove cigarettes. Seriously folks: the clove topping, be it naturally og synthetically (eugenol), actually numbed my tongue and palate. Dentists use it as a mild anaesthetic, and apparantly so does Astley. This was a very, very weird experience in a pipe smoking perspective....Read More
