Cornell & Diehl: Gates of Light: Sha'are Orah 2oz Pipe Tobacco

Product Number: 003-016-0289

Fans of Cornell and Diehl may not be familiar with William Serad, but they may know his work. A longtime friend of C&D founder Craig Tarler, the two were frequent collaborators. Serad is responsible for creating several classic blends such as Cross-Eyed Cricked and Red Carpet. William was also a friend of the rabbi Ira Stone, who loved Burley, Oriental and Perique mixtures and asked Serad to put together some blends for him. Those blends eventually became the Hebraica series, each featuring the rabbi's favored components. Each blend in the series was named by Stone, inspired by the language and spirituality of Jewish tradition.

Sha'are Orah, or Gates of Light, is named after a book of the same name by Rabbi Joseph ben Abraham Gikatilla, widely regarded as a foundational text in the history of Kabbalah. This mixture combines a base of cube-cut Burley and stoved Red Virginias with touches of Perique and Orientals, creating a delicate and satisfying balance of sweetness and spice. In 2022, Cornell and Diehl established an exclusive partnership with 31 Farms to provide smokers with access to 100% St. James Perique, now included in every blend that contains the unique varietal.

Product: Cornell & Diehl Gates of Light: Sha'are Orah 2oz
It seems good, but I don't get the taste. To me it's too grassy and hayish, nothing rich or complex in the taste. Burns well, strengh a bit higher medium.

Product: Cornell & Diehl Gates of Light: Sha'are Orah 2oz
Heavy on the original flavour of the leaf and dense heavy smoke. Being a Corneil and Deihl product i thought this would be a slightly aromatic something like a American Delight but it wasnt and took me by surprise, a pleasant one. May be not a everyday smoke for me but still perfect for occasions.....Read More

Fantasticly complex and simple all at the same time. It's unfortunate that this blend isn't more popular. If you are a non aromatic smoker, and you haven't tried this blend, you are missing something great

The tin of this I’m finishing up now is almost a year old, so - bear in mind I hit the jackpot. But this has got to be my favorite treatment of C&D’s Perique so far. Its interplay between that mouth-watering Stoved Red and the floral hints of Turkish is nothing short of miraculous. A ponderous medley of some of the best raw components you can find, curl up with a good book and stretch your mind a little - you’re in for a sweet and spicy ride all the way to powdertown....Read More

Product: Cornell & Diehl Gates of Light: Sha'are Orah 2oz
Straight tobacco flavor on a burley base. Short of stout but pleanty of body. With a bit of perique spice and turkish providing a tempting note. Cool and dry. Maybe less cubed than the earliest edition but still asubstantial blend.

Product: Cornell & Diehl Gates of Light: Sha'are Orah 2oz
A little sweet throughout with a bit of pepper and spice. Burley strength with subtle Burley flavor. Stays lit well and for me a very satisfying smoke. Didn’t like it at first but after letting the tin sit for a few days, it smoothed out nicely. Feels dry but smokes just right...there’s some moisture hiding in the Burley I suspect. I want to compare it to Daylight, another good blend and recently acquired but it’s different...spicier And not quite as strong. I’ll want to try all the blends in this series as the first two are generally satisfying and tasty. I like it....Read More
