Bader's Briar's BEST Everyday Mixture Choice
September 10, 2016
Product: Cornell & Diehl New Market Bulk
I've been enjoying New Market for well over a decade now (closer to TWO decades, in fact!), and it's simply the best everyday-style (day-in, day-out) mixture my briars handle I've ever enjoyed. I DO like C&D's Stratfordshire for my favorite Engl... Read More
ish blend (I strictly stick with milder blends ONLY, so NO perique, please!) as a "change of pace" mixture, and I'm certainly willing to give C&D's Autumn Evening a try this autumn...but the New Market's combo of a light sweetness (a bit like a combo in the naturally "sweet" room note category, of half like something with LOTS of raisins baking in the oven (who doesn't like that?) and half like the aroma of a freshly mown lawn is something I hope to continue enjoying...please get it back in stock, just as soon as you can! I've had it with this lousy stinking blend all it does is that it burns to a black crisp charcoal I tried adding moisture and I keep trying to smoke it and all it does is it stinks up my pipes to smell like that damn nasty weed and charcoal. I even ... Read More

I love deer tongue. BUT the pouch smells of iodine and it tastes what I imagine iodine to taste like. I have never had such a medicinal flavoured tobacco and it has gone in the bin.
Deertongue sans Burley anyone?

Deertongue is an interesting leaf to say the least. Perhaps it would be more at home in a Native American sandstone pipe, but it's a nice change-of-pace for anyone's pipe. It has a sort of muted vanilla and slightly minty taste with a somewhat sage-l... Read More
ike smell. There's not a lot of blends out there using Deertongue, but I think the one's that are use it well, mostly as a natural condiment. The most famous would be C&D's Crooner, which is a strong (great cube cut) Burley forward blend. Then there's C&D's Gentleman Caller for the Perique fans. And, C&D's Engine #382, which comes closest to New Market, but differs in that it contains Burley just like the others mentioned. So, that leaves New Market alone; the only Deertongue including blend with no Burley (unless you count the unflavored Cavendish, which I don't). And in this niche, New Market does perform well. It has good mechanics. I've noticed that it comes at the best moisture level it's going to get and can dry out rather quickly if not jarred. But overall, This is a nice blend for anyone wanting to try Deertongue tobacco. Keep in mind that it's not for everybody, and even those who try this because of the lack of Burley may not like it. But, you'll never know unless you give it a try. Read Less
Least fav deer tongue blend

Crooner is my favorite deer tongue blend, then Gentleman caller, then this dead last. It is just a bad combination. My hope is that after the virginias age it will taste better.
A Taste of Honey. After aging, tobacco became a medicine.

The tobacco came well moist. The smell from the bag was like honey honeycombs. The tobacco is cut finely, packs well and burns slowly. The aroma is floral-honey. Very pleasant smoke does not bite. Interesting experience.

I’ll compare this to my all time favorite C&D, Gentleman Caller because it’s a deer tounge blend. While gent caller is very burley forward and smooth, this blend is definitely Virginia forward. Sharp and brassy on first light, this one needs to b... Read More
e smoked slow, maybe in a smaller bowl. As the blend smokes down the deertounge and cavendish help to mellow this blend a tad. All in all, it’s not gentleman caller but for a bulk deertounge blend I believe this one will cellar nicely Read Less

This mix is superb. I enjoy all of the CD deer tongue blends and this one is my favorite. I think:) At least this one is tickling my fancy the most at the moment. Room note reminds me of the sweetgrass braids. Beautiful aromatic herb.

I tried this in an old cob, and the experience was underwhelming. It tastes better than Engine #382 (another Deer Tongue blend), but not by much. Also, now I can't smoke anything else in it without tasting Deer Tongue. The aroma in the jar, though, i... Read More

First, I love Crooner and Gentleman Caller(the other deer tongue offerings from C&D), but this mixture is just not balanced. Mostly lemon Virginia and not much deer tongue. The two just don't seem to mix well. Hopefully, it will improve with age
