Reminiscent of Three Nuns
October 18, 2017
Product: Cornell & Diehl Three Friars Bulk
This tobacco became a daily smoker for awhile, and only recently really pinpointed why. I am a huge fan of the Three Nuns, and this Tobacco is a pretty good imitation. It’s not as strong as I would have liked, though not saying it was a good nicotin... Read More
e hit. The natural sweatness compensates for where this tobacco falls short. This was a nice dry cool smoke, which was a great plus compared to my last batch of Three Nuns. I will be ordering again. Read Less

Citrusy bright Virginia ribbon and musky, peppery balls of Perique is aggregated with big chunks of broken flake - what must be Brown Virginia. I don’t taste any of the Burley, only Perique and Virginia. The flake has an almost graham cracker-like tw... Read More
ang to it, a lot like Newminster No. 400. No need to fiddle with this blend, just pack and light (I did find an almost entirely intact flake at the bottom of my bag, but still, the larger chunks lend enjoyable variation to each bowl.) The nicotine level is just right, but it can pack a punch after consecutive bowls. Turns out to be a pretty good daily smoke, though. Goes good with a cup of black coffee first thing in the morning - it’s an eye-opener. Read Less
Flat And Boring

I had high hopes for this blend, but sadly it fell short for me. I don't know why, but for me it was very flat and boring in flavor. I much prefer Haunted Bookshop.

This blend piqued my curiosity based on the description so I ordered a couple of ounces to try. Over all not bad. A well balanced and well behaved blend, tho the spice of the perique did bleed thru heavily here and there.

It is very unique, and enjoyable spring smoke, however I would have liked the va to be a bit more forward. Its definitely worth a try for anyone who is looking for a good spring morning smoke.

I know the name is a play off of Three Nuns, but I can see no resemblance to the new and have never tried the old...but for whatever reason this reminds me more of Dunhill Elizabethan Mixture than anything else (even with a healthy dose of Burley in ... Read More
it). This is a nice VA/Bur with just a hint of perique (all my palate can pick up). A faint sweetness from the Virginia's provides a nice backdrop for the earthy and grassy flavors from the VA's and the woody and slightly nutty (think Brazil nuts). After the half way point there are some toasty notes and I get a unique spicy favor, like a hint of white pepper and all spice. The perique is more of a feeling than a flavor in this blend for me, but I am sure it accounts for the peppery favors toward the 2nd half. Very nice, simple smoke that goes well with morning coffee. Some very large pieces of flake in the pouch which need breaking down before packing the bowl. Very like Three Nuns. Tasty!

bone here to keep the balance. There are some earthy notes, and some nuttiness as well. The body is creamy and never gets harsh. At first I didn't enjoy this blend So I gave it some jar time. About six months later it is a totally different experience. YMMV but this is a winner in my book Read Less

Smoked cool and dry. Not pretentious—it's exactly what it says it is. And I like that.

This blend is a more civilized, smoother, not as vitamin N heavy cousin to Poplar Camp. They share the same flavor profile to my taste; both, though, are excellent tobaccos.
Don't compare to others, love it for itself.

Delicious blend of tobacco. I could barely taste the burley, which was fine with me as I’m not a big fan of Burley. I love this Three Friars. It’s delicious! I’ll be ordering more if this soon!

Update: This wasn't coming into its own, so I blended it 50/50 with C&D Bright Virginia for a nice Va with a bit of burley body and pleasant trace of sweetness from the subtle casing. ----------- I'll come back to this, because 3F seems like a blend ... Read More
that could grow on you. The perique and burley are in wonderful balance with each other, though overall I might like more Virginia. Still, this is nice as a straightforward, naturally presented burley blend, and is something I will go to before, say, Haunted Bookshop (I'm not that much of a burley fanatic.) Variety is a good thing, and while I'm not ready to rave about it, Three Friars deserves a few revisits before final judgement. Read Less

Not a bad smoke by any means, just not a favorite for me. It's pleasantly nutty, but the Perique was a little forward for my taste. Overall, not bad, but not all that exciting either.

I finally got this blend to work in a narrow old basket pipe I've had for years. There is a lot to like here when it works, but this will never be a favorite of mine.

This blend stuck out to me from the first. It was the grassiest Virginia I had smelled in the tin. It was also the lightest coloured mixture I had purchased up to that time. I am not sure what my expectations were, if I had any, but I can say that ul... Read More
timately I was not disappointed by this blend.
The somewhat unsophisticated tin note did not prepare me for the variety of specific flavours that the palate actually presents. It starts with grassy notes, and then develops into very distinct notes of green and black teas. It remained consistently herbal with some faint hints of fruit, but did turn ashy toward the end.
Mechanically, it could burn hot in light winds or with some steady puffing. But it packed so easily and lit so quickly that I could readily forgive such temperamental behaviour. Moreover, it burned down to a fine white ash with few, if any, relights required. Finally, the wife found the room note inoffensive, but not as favourable as other blends.
All in all, I enjoyed the company of these Three Friars. I have this on my list to buy again. I recommend this blend to smokers of all stripes. It may be too light for many, but it is worth a try.
Cheers to all! Read Less

remember Old Joe Krantz as a similar taste, but Three Friars are lighter, and Virginia and Perique complement each other to emphasize the sourness obtained from Burley. he burley adds just a hint of strenghth to what would otherwise be fairly anemic on my palate. I say this, of course, with the disclaimer that I tend to favor heavy tobaccos.
