As I'm smoking my way into (if not yet "through") GLP's English catalog, I'm really enjoying where I happen to be standing now; what a truly sweet treat the Maltese Falcon is! I usually glaze over the tin note a bit (bad habit?) on the blends that feature latakia. I notice a difference here that stood out. There's almost a current of desert baked goods taking up space where deeper smoke or creosote might normally reside. In the case of this blend, it seems to carry over to the smoking experience.
When I had it in a smaller bulldog, it comported itself as a more medium blend, one that let the Orientals conduct a fair bit of the conversation. When loaded up in the trusty Peterson 315, the sweeter notes carried forward. I can't find a single rough edge, bitter or sour corner anywhere in the whole portion I've had. I'm also beginning to understand why GL Pease is held in the esteem and regard that he is. The accuracy of these works lends you the details (nuance) that you have to smoke for yourself to appreciate. There is your crux; this is truly (as others already mention) a must-smoke. It's well featured and flavored without being an oriental or latakia "bomb", yet the balance and current of sweetness would be pleasing to anyone. An Outstanding English Blend

I really like G. L. Pease Maltese Falcon! This is easily a 5-star blend for me.

It has everything I enjoy in a good English mixture—rich, smoky Latakia, plenty of depth, and a wonderful natural sweetness that keeps it from becoming too dry or one-dimensional. There’s a nice balance between the smoky, earthy character and the sweeter Virginia notes, with just enough spice and complexity to keep every bowl interesting.

What really stands out to me is how full-flavored and satisfying it is without being overwhelming. The flavors develop as you work your way down the bowl, and I find myself enjoying it more and more as I smoke it.

If you enjoy rich, flavorful English blends with some sweetness and complexity, Maltese Falcon is definitely worth trying. This is one I’ll gladly keep in my rotation—and one I can see myself buying again and again.

Silky Smooth

What a smooth English blend this is. Silky is the perfect word for this blend. It’s mellow, but rich and complex. The Latakia pairs beautifully with the Red Virginias to create a sweet and smooth smokiness. The flue-cured adds a bright, sweet, and earthy quality that seems to round out the sweetness, while the Orientals take the form of an earthy spice. This is my 2nd English blend I have tried my 1st was Seattle Pipe club Plum Pudding Special Reserve and that was amazing but this Maltese Falcon I think is much better it is SO NICE!!! Might be my all day English blend but I said that about the 1st one as well.

I’m enjoying Maltese Falcon in my new Peterson Christmas Pipe 20s, and it’s proving to be a fantastic pairing. The Cyprian Latakia is rich, smoky, and woody without overwhelming the matured Red Virginias and Orientals. There’s a wonderful natural sweetness underneath the smoke, along with an intriguing spice that develops as the bowl progresses. It has plenty of depth and character while remaining remarkably smooth and refined.
What really impresses me is how effortlessly everything works together. It’s full bodied enough to satisfy when I want a proper English mixture, but balanced enough that I could easily smoke it throughout the day. It burns beautifully, stays interesting from first light to the bottom of the bowl, and never becomes harsh or muddled. Rich, silky, slightly sweet, smoky, and complex.
