Sweet and spicy

Product: G. L. Pease Stratford 2oz
Currently, this is my go to tobacco. I really do like this stuff. It took me a few bowls to warm up to it, but now I just can't get enough. The rotation currently is Stratford, Regent's flake, and Scottish flake. Stratford is probably the spiciest ou... Read More
t of all of those and I think slightly sweeter than Scottish flake but not as rich. It has a little bit of hay, some sweet, very nice mouth feel with the perique, and some pleasant high notes that I'm really not sure how to describe. Piquant, maybe? The perique is mainly in the mouth feel, some fruity taste there, but subtle. However, that is one of my favorite things about perique, that tingle! I highly recommend this. It can be an all day smoke. It won't knock you over, and just really has a pleasantness that keeps you coming back for another bowl. Enjoy! Read Less
Where's the Perique?

Tin note is mostly hay with a subtle hint of plum. My tin was a tad on the dry side upon opening and burned hot and quick. Great Virginia's in this blend but the Perique is barely noticeable. Not a substitute for Elizabethan in my opinion.
Good GLP Replacement for Elizabethan Mixture

Product: G. L. Pease Stratford 2oz
After experimenting with several GLP and C&D tobaccos as a replacement for Dunhill's Elizabethan Mixture (EM), I believe Stratford fills that gap the best. Stratford shares a similar flavor profile, although it is a little less perique forward th... Read More
an EM. Stratford is more balanced in its blending of Virginias and Perique, and it provides a great smoke from beginning to end. Some other GLP and C&D approximate EM more in terms of taste (Telegraph Hill and Fillmore), but right out of the tin, Stratford is nearly perfect and will undoubtedly age well. I actually enjoy it more than I did EM, and it is now my go-to Va/Per as an all-day working smoke. You can puff away while working, and if you want to take time to enjoy its complexity, it provides that also, along with a medium nic-hit. Highly recommended! Read Less
Pretty much perfect

I first tried this blend to replace Elizabeathan mixture (back when it was unavailable) and realized that I should have been smoking this one all along. It's well balanced and great all day smoke. I highly recommend this to any va/per fans
Quite nice!

Update: Now that my fresh briar has some cake on it, the sweetness of this blend is much more foreward and seems to come through at the start of each draw. The spice comes in immediately after, blending with the sweetness. The flavor is much better a... Read More
nd more complex than I had initially thought. If it starts to burn too hot the sweetness will fade and become more spicey, if it starts to get too cool and starts going out you'll only really get the sweetness to come through with an afterthought of spice. I have raised my review by one star. The original posting remains below. ------
This is a really nice blend, needs minimal dry time before getting packed up, if any at all. The scent out of the tin is really mild, mostly smells like fresh tobacco. The flavor starts out with a bit of sweetness on the charring light, followed by a nice long bowl of spice with hints of sweetness coming through intermittently. Pairs wonderfully with a good cup of tea, it really helps brings out the complexity of the flavor. I also enjoyed how consistently this burned and tasted all the way down to the bottom with minimal maintenance. If you're a faster smoker you might find that this will overheat pretty easily. The aftertaste is very warm, like I just drank a hot spiced cider with a dash of whiskey. (Not the apple flavor, the rest of the spice and warmth) There's also a faint tartness that makes my mouth water, it reactivated the spicey flavor and goes back to tart which starts the cycle again. The room note is really mild, earthy and spicey, can't complain about it or rave about it. Read Less
It's nice, but too lite for my liking

The bright Virginias in this are very nice. My tin was very dry, not sure if that's normal, but for a ribbon cut it just burns way too fast. I am going to rehydrate it. If I'm wanting something super lite, I'll pull this out again, but it was just ov... Read More

Stratford has been compared to Elizabethan but Stradtford has more red Virginias and a just touch less perique IMO. This is a great all day smoke. It is very balanced and nuanced like all of the G.L. Pease blends I have smoked. Telegraph Hill has ... Read More
more bright Virginias and Fillmore has more perique. Stratdford is my favorite of the Pease Va/Per trio because I prefer red Virginias and the perique content in Fillmore is a bit much for me. In terms of taste is has a peppery cherry taste with wonderful moments of mushroom earthiness that keep me coming back for more. I also get a bit of cranberry at times. I prefer the taste of flakes but this ribbon is a nice break and very easy to deal with and burns very nicely especially for breaking in pipes. Read Less

Product: G. L. Pease Stratford 2oz
This is a very well done, top tier tobacco.
For my tastes, it is very similar to the Old Dunhill Elizabethan Mixture, which recently got acquired under the Peterson umbrella and which used to be a regular smoke for me. Stratford is mellow, tangy wi... Read More

A good, honest VaPer. Nothing in this blend hits too hard. In reviewing my tasting notes it was quite common to bound back and forth between a Virginia dominated puff and a Perique one. Very pleasant all the way to the bottom of the bowl, and one ... Read More

This blend has a very complex flavor profile. It feels like it might be way too dry but its perfect out of the tin. The blend is full bodied with lots of flavor. It will bite if you smoke too fast so small sips bring out good flavors. Good stuff.
