About This Pipe Tobacco

A blended, sliced cake of high-grade flue cured leaf, from beautiful, sweet brights to deep, earthy reds, without the added sugars and flavourings common to many Virginia flakes. It's rich on the palate, evolving in layers with the clean, natural sweetness of pure tobaccos. It offers a pleasant room note, and a delightful finish. For those seeking the pure Virginia experience, try Pease's Union Square.

Where Fermentation Becomes the Feature - Tang
February 25, 2026
Product: G. L. Pease Union Square 8oz
Union Square stands out for its dough. The crust has a noticeable fermented tang β€” clean, lactic, and sourdough-adjacent β€” that hits first without turning sharp or acidic. It’s a bright, savory sourness that adds depth and balance rather than overpowering the slice. The profile is reminiscent of Golden Slice, but Union Square feels just as intentional, with fermentation used to give the yogurt like character, not gimmick....Read More

Again as I always say I am a newbie. About Pure Virginia, I only tried Peterson flake before. I thought Union Square would be a bit bitter, hard to smoke because there is not any topping ... well, I was completely wrong. It burns very easily, it is naturally sweet. With some clear honey and hay flavor. I precise the box was 4 years old. I just smoked my first bol and I may be a bit too enthusiastic, I will edit if my mind change. But ouhaaaaaaa, this was a great surprise....Read More

Daily Driver

Product: G. L. Pease Union Square 2oz
I’ve been enjoying pipes since 2008, and the road from goopy, drug store aromatics to a refined palate has been long and winding, hopefully with many more good miles ahead. It was only about 5 years ago that I really started getting into pure Virginia’s, and I have to say that they now form the base of my cellar. Union Square, after nearly 2 months of daily attention, has worked its way to daily driver status. It’s mellow and easier to burn than John Cotton’s Double Pressed, Orlik or MacBaren, and offers a sweet, bread crust flavor that really pleases my palate. I rarely need to relight, even on 2hr bowls in my IMP bent egg meerschaum. Even after multiple bowls, the aftertaste is mild, sweet and non-intrusive. I’ve had many blends that taste great in the moment but come with a rough, acrid payback after smoking. This is not one of those. The lack of casing or topping and the mildness of the virginias selected for Union Square allow me to enjoy bowl after bowl and always leave me with a scrumptious taste afterwards. This may be the best tobacco I’ve found to date....Read More
Leaf stands well on its own

Product: G. L. Pease Union Square 2oz
The tin I bought had roughly two months' worth of age. Tobacco is technically in something closer to a looser/spongey broken flake. Not what I was expecting but as a result was easier to handle and pack.

I was bracing myself for some much harsher tastes given it's advertised as not having a
ny flavorings or added sugars. What I got instead was something mellow and creamy, with some toasted marshmallow and butterscotch tastes. Any bitter elements were slight and had a rustic bread crust or melted sugar taste....Read More
