About This Pipe Tobacco

The very essence of the traditional English mixture; rich, elegant, refined, and exquisitely balanced. New World red Virginias are enhanced with a gentle caress of bright leaf, then lavishly seasoned with rich Oriental tobaccos and generous measures of noble Cyprus mountain Latakia. Westminster from G. L. Pease is a satisfying blend, presenting layers of flavor to delight the senses as it develops in the bowl. A perfect every-day English.

Perfect English

Product: G. L. Pease Westminster 2oz
I smoke a lot of English blends. I am a latakia lover. This blend is the perfect English blend, especially if you like oriental forward englishes. The orientals really pop here, but i would not call it a balkan, as some do. There is enough latakia to call it a proper English, the red virginia and orientals offer a lot of nuance and keeps the smoke interesting throughout. Its has almost no sweetness, mostly a musty, sour, tangy, earthy, smokey delight....Read More

I’ve been smoking some great English blends lately—heavy hitters from G.L. Pease like Gaslight, Quiet Night, and Lagonda. I’ve spent my evenings parked in the old armchair on my porch, savoring and dissecting these fine blends.
But today, I’m not looking for a head-spinner. I just want a quintess
ential, high-quality English blend that burns easily in my pipe for a daytime smoke. Something no-nonsense that I can puff on distractedly, only to be surprised halfway through the bowl by a sudden, pleasant aroma. Westminster is made for exactly that. A solid 4 stars, no question....Read More

I’m primarily an English smoker, and this blend has made it into my regular rotation of four blends. It’s well balanced, medium in body, and complex. The orientals are the star of the show here. They taste strongly of incense, such as frankincense and myrrh. This is the primary taste that everything else orbits around. There’s a dry, pleasant sharpness to this blend, which is once again imparted by the orientals. At times it almost feels fresh and menthol-like in a pleasant way in the retrohale. The general impression is that of resinous Mediterranean wood. Fantastic! The Latakia is quite present, but remains as a backdrop to the orientals. It has its usual smoky taste, with a mild leathery flavor to it. I occasionally get a slight mustiness in the flavor, which I assume comes from how the Latakia interacts with the Virginias due to their sugar content. The Virginias also remain in the background. I occasionally get a mild buttery toasty flavor, which I attribute to the Virginias. Sometimes you may get a slight fruity flavor from the Virginias such as fig, but this is very subtle. There’s absolutely no bitterness in this blend. Just balanced English deliciousness. Nicotine is just a bit passed medium, but it’s not excessive by any means. I could go on and on about little flavors and nuances I pick up in this blend, but I don’t want to belabor the point. Just buy it....Read More
G. L. Pease Westminster: A Good Low Nicotine Tobacco
October 19, 2025
Product: G. L. Pease Westminster 2oz
For those of us with an aversion to nicotine, finding a tobacco that both tastes good and does not have the negative effects of too much nicotine can be a difficult search. Frog Morton original and On the Town had been my go to tobaccos, but since McClelland went out of business this is no longer an option. Another good option was Hearth & Home Daybreak, but it was discontinued. I have some tins of FM stockpiled but I know they won’t last forever, so I’ve been searching for something to replace it. I tried some of Peterson’s English mixtures, but they all caused me the telltale signs of too much nicotine: mild nausea and dizziness and elevated heartrate. I came across the G.L. Pease English mixtures and tried several of them when they were on sale. Many of them seem quite low in nicotine and do not have the negative effects of nausea and dizziness I get with most tobaccos.

Although Charing Cross is my personal favorite, Westminster is also quite good. Westminster is a more Virginia forward tobacco, with just enough oriental and latakia to add spiciness to the Virginias. To me Westminster is the lightest flavored of the G.L. Pease English blends. I don’t detect any toppings or other added flavors, just the Virginias with some spiciness from the orientals and latakia. It is apparently the most popular of the G.L. Pease English blends since it is the only one available in 16 oz tins. I am going to stock up on a few of these while they are available. If you’re searching for a low nicotine English tobacco blend with subdued flavor, I highly recommend you give Westminster a try.
