The very essence of the traditional English mixture; rich, elegant, refined, and exquisitely balanced. New World red Virginias are enhanced with a gentle caress of bright leaf, then lavishly seasoned with rich Oriental tobaccos and generous measures of noble Cyprus mountain Latakia. Westminster from G. L. Pease is a satisfying blend, presenting layers of flavor to delight the senses as it develops in the bowl. A perfect every-day English.
Smokey, rich, and everything you want a on a brisk fall night. I was given a sample of this from a friend, and once finished I immediately ordered some and brought it into my rotation. Heavier on the Latikia side, but still those orientals find their... Read More way into the mix. I've heard this could be an all day smoke, but I usually like to end my day with it. The strength of the nic isn't going to push you over however, if you're looking for that I'd go with nightcap. This is easily the best English style tobacco I smoke. It's easy to pack and light, and produces very nice clouds of smoke. Has an emphasis on smokey Latakia with a hint of sweetness in the background. A delightful smoke any time of day, but parti... Read Morecularly in the evenings. Read Less
This Blend is nice as it has a smooth start, and pleasant finish, but unlike Abingdon, this one is sour, not sweet.
A good morning English, with a nice bit of spice, and cooling finish.
A definite must buy!
I agree with the previous posters. This is a smooth all-day English that has to be tasted to believe.
Kudos Mr. Pease!
On a lark I mixed this blend 50/50 with Dunhill London Mixture and was very pleased with the resulting smoke. Take it around ... Read Morethe block and see what you think. Read Less
This has been my goto english for years now. It has a slightly sweet, nut-like flavor that persists throughout the bowl. Add a dash of pepper and an occasional bit of bitterness and you have it. It’s darkly full bodied and incredibly consistent. ... Read MoreThe downside is that consistency - smoked all day it can become boring. Once a day though it remains amasing. Read Less
Good, but not my favourite GL Pease blend. I found it a little harsh when fresh from the tin. I have put this away for nearly a year now. I will revisit this blend soon and update this review if the age has made a difference.
I dislike buying tobacco that ends up being unsatisfactory. I have not had that experience with any of GLP's english blends. Westminster is very good. It is a balanced smoke, easily an all-day english. Not a real lat-bomb, just smooth, calming, and d... Read Moreelicious tobacco. Read Less
Upon offering a friend a bowlful of Westminster, he responded, "Whoa, this tastes like an old red wine that's been in some musty cellar for decades, and it's really, really gamey! Firstly, I really enjoy English blends. I couldn't believe the hype surrounding this particular blend, so I ordered a tin. Secondly, I always give every new tobacco a fair chance by trying it on several different occasions, with different whiskies, a... Read Morend after different meals. I have had many English tobaccos in my experience and this is one I'll forget about and never buy again.
The cut is rather coarse; colossal chunks with many stems in the tin. As many others have found to be the case, I too had trouble keeping this tobacco lit. The flavour has potential, but it only came through with extreme rubbing of the blend in order to thin it out. So all three factors combined made this an unfortunate but learning experience. I don't like to criticize any brand at all, but there were too many negatives with this blend, and there are many fine tobaccos on the market to choose from. Read Less
and yea, I must concur with David R, this blend is reliably fulfulling -- ripe and grassy with a hint of olives in its scent, and latheringly leathery in its thick texture, Westminster has never failed me either to be satiating. It's aromatic profile... Read More I suppose, could be called humble -- but most definitely not meek; a few sonorous tones fluidly interweave, and then leave, a mellow-deep aftertaste. I find it singularly odd and pleasing that the word that most comes to mind when I think of this tobacco is, rotund.
Alas, there was a day not too long in the past, when the afternoon concluding in an ethereally gloomy dusk, I puffed on a pipe of Westminster, and it blossomed to a truly exceptional smoke. I mean to say, that despite some meadiocre bowls, do not lose hope (that cheap thing, sweet thing) too soon, as perhaps the moment most suited for that particular leaf has not come.
In response to Mark G: I almost always dry (using the heat of the sun, a pre-warmed oven, heater, or fire) my tobaccos to a moistureless fluffyness (avoiding scorching them to the point when they become crisp and crumbled to dust) for a well-burning smoke. And certainly increasing the surface area available to combustion (that is cutting it up) will increase the ease of burning -- when I roll fags of pipe tobacco (Westminster does not make a good cigarette alone however) I always do this. Full of flavor, well balanced and smooth and creamy smoke. As someone else said, this is a paradigm of an english blend. Highly recommended. I guess cellaring a pair of years of this one would be fantastic!!..
When I want to give newer pipe smokers a classic english to sample I let them try Westminster. I am not a veteran pipe smoker, but this is sort of the bar for me as far as english blends go. Westminster has a smoky, sour, and musty flavor profile. It... Read More is very flavorful but not strong (in nicotine), so could easily be an all day smoke. Westminster has never failed to produce a good, solid, English smoke for me. I have yet to experience a truly GREAT pipe full of it, but I have never had a less than a pleasing one. To me, that is worth 4 stars; just not a consistently GREAT 5.
I absolutely love this blend and will definitely cellar some. Tastes like it would only get better with time. This blend is as British as a Union Jack. Tastes and smells like an aristocrat's study. A must-try for any English blend fan.
