About This Pipe
Henri Sørensen has always appreciated old-school craftsmanship, and like many pipe makers, he began his journey as a simple smoker. Initially, Henri entered the world of pipe making as a glazier, eventually crafting his own pieces under the guidance of renowned Danish artisans such as Tom Eltang, Erick Nielsen, and Lasse Skovgaard. Showcasing his ability to blend classic shaping with refined craftsmanship, this paneled Billiard is an excellent example of his work. Because paneled designs are not tied to any one shaping tradition, they give artisans ample room for creative interpretation, and Sørensen takes full advantage of that freedom here.
Paneled designs demand a high degree of precision, especially in a Billiard such as this, where crisp ridgelines define nearly every aspect of the composition while maintaining a clean, balanced profile. The bowl is framed by six panels that are broad at the heel before tapering subtly toward the rim, where a view from above reveals a crisp hexagonal form. The shank is likewise rendered in a matching hexagonal panel configuration, creating a seamless transition from bowl to stem, with the paneling continuing through the tapered mouthpiece. Fashioned from remarkably clear, amber-hued acrylic, the stem is striking enough to reveal its internal engineering, while its warm tones evoke the look of glowing embers and pair beautifully with the stummel's rich, glossy finish. That finish showcases lively flame grain wrapping around the bowl, with a dense field of birdseye covering the underside. Completing the composition, a pale mammoth accent at the junction provides a welcome contrast, its cool coloration and natural striations standing out boldly against the warmer palette of the briar and stem.
