Smooth Bent Apple with Bronze and Bakelite (646) Tobacco Pipe

Yeti pipes are made by Micah Cryder, whose skill with muscular and compact design cues is undeniably on point with this bent Apple. The smooth finish of the stummel elevates the grain with contrast stain around the flanks as well as the sides of the shank, while the plateau rim offers contrast of texture with its gnarly, natural undulation. Additional contrast is provided by a sophisticated ring of bronze at the end of the shank, its golden/copper tone complementing the dark stain while offering distinct sophistication in a simple and refined band. Additional contrast is provided by the variegated mouthpiece, its saddle configuration highlighted by the sapphire hues.

The stem is made of Bakelite, the first plastic made from synthetic components, which was originally patented in 1909 and quickly made an impact on the world. Hard and durable, it's able to be formed into specific shapes and is an excellent electrical insulation. From the 1920s to the 1950s, Bakelite was used in the fashioning of telephones, pens, jewelry boxes, lamps — you name it. Modern plastics are cheaper to make, with more item-specific properties, but Bakelite is still used for some aerospace and automotive applications, and for artistic uses such as found here. It combines beautifully with the bronze, which itself has a history of 5,000 years, for a composition of modern handsomeness paired to nostalgic and historic character.
