About This Pipe

Formerly known as the American Pipe Making Exposition, our annual Global Pipe Making Exposition features contributions from some of the world's foremost artisans, all united around a central theme. One of the most exciting events of the year for carvers, smokers, and enthusiasts of briar alike, the Global Exposition acts not only as a showcase for the immense talent of these artisans but a focus for the boundless creativity that these masters of the art possess. For 2025, the theme of our Expo is "In Memoriam," celebrating the life and works of artisans who have passed on, yet whose impact on the craft and those around them is utterly undeniable.

Peter Heding was introduced to briar in 2003, which he described as "love at first sight." Since then, Heding has dedicated himself to mastering the craft of pipe making, drawing inspiration from the Danish school of design. His dedication to quality craftsmanship is exemplified in this Nautilus, which pays homage to the esteemed Swedish maker Bo Nordh.

Nordh was central to the Danish artisan movement of the 1970s, working alongside famed makers such as Sixten Ivarsson. His dedication to shaping pipes in a way that showcased the natural grain of the briar revolutionized the craft. Nordh's legacy is not just in the shapes he pioneered, but in the philosophy he championed: one that honors the material and further elevates pipe making as an art form — a philosophy perfectly embodied by his signature Nautilus design.

Over the years, we have received several Nautilus pipes from Peter Heding, making it fitting that he would revisit the shape for this year's Expo, honoring the man who originally pioneered the challenging design. While Heding's Nautilus renditions have taken various forms, each piece has emphasized the shape's sculptural qualities. Before this year, we hadn't received a Nautilus that had earned the carver's prestigious Diamond grade, which he reserves for his finest work, making this particular iteration even more enticing.

The Nautilus closely resembles the shell of its namesake, featuring a stummel that curls inward and a shank that connects to the bowl. This design is achieved through a careful interplay of momentum, starting at the rim. Heding crafted the rim here with a slope that raises the bowl's fore wall high above the aft, a feature commonly found in Nordh's original design. This momentum is continued through the lifted heel, which gives the entire bowl a forward trajectory. The motion sweeps through the shank and extends all the way through the stem's curve. Remarkably, all of this is accomplished while ensuring the shape remains robust and comfortable to hold, an impressive detail that might not be expected from such a structured design.

Appropriate for a tribute to Bo Nordh, the grain patterns on this piece are truly stunning. The rim showcases breathtaking, windswept flame grain, while the front and back of the stummel feature cross-grain that aligns perfectly with the shape. This orientation allows the birdseye-covered flanks to be fully displayed. Lastly, a small Zirconia diamond is embedded on the underside of the shank, signifying this piece's Diamond grade.
