Geat Aromatic Blend

Product: Ashton Winding Road 50g
A refreshing aromatic blend with just the right sweetness and stone fruit flavors that compliment the natural flavors of Virginias. A pleasant suprise after reading some reviews. Tin note is a touch of apricot with a wonderful Virginia note. Moistur... Read More
e level is perfect, no need to dry before packing. I would not call it a blend between Aromatic to English, however, it is not so heavily topped like some aromtics it is lightly topped allowing tobacco flavors through. No bite notice. The ribbon cut is spot on and perfect. Highly recommend to beginners as it is a friendly tobacco to use and pack. Smokes well in a Rattray's Outlaw Devil Anse as well as larger pipes. Read Less

Tin note of mild apricots, Carmel and sugar. Tobacco is light brown ribbon cut with a little dark brown and a tiny amount of black mixed in. Moisture content is ok. Drying may be needed for some. Burns moderate with few relights. The strength is mild... Read More
and nic is mild. Flavoring is mild, with notes of Apricot and Caramel. Both flavors don't last long, Carmel a little longer in the background. Taste is mild to medium and consistent, with notes of floral, wood, bread, spices, citrus, hay, mild tart, sweet grassy, mildly spicy, slightly acidic, mild brown sugar, a zesty tangy fruity background note, and a moderate peppery retro. Virginia is leading with minimal support from the Cavendish and Flavoring. Room note is pleasant, and aftertaste is good. Read Less

My take on this is that this is a very good but subtle blend. The name fits it, not much of an aro, but a very nice smoke. To me it's more Virginia forward without the bite. I was not crazy about it first few puffs but I stopped judging it for what I... Read More

Great Blend

I decided to try this after Rainy Day (which I liked a lot) and I was not disappointed. It is a very smooth smoke with a good room note. I see a lot of other people bringing up tongue bite but I had no problem with it. Just smoke it cool and slow, li... Read More
ke any other blend. The virginia's come through nicely and their sweetness is accentuated by the caramel flavouring - but its never overpowering, its very smooth and pleasant. I got the hints of apricot the first time I smoked the blend, but I seem to lose it the more I smoke it. No problem though, just change out blends and cleanse the palate, then come back to Winding Road. All in all, very pleasant, very smooth, and a lovely smelling blend/smoke. Read Less
One of the worst blends of the year for me

This had no flavor. A hint of apricot upon initial light. After the second puff began, goodbye everything. This found it's way straight to my trash can. Avoid it.
Not worth the effort

Ashton has a way with evocative names for their tobacco blends - unfortunately this one almost ruined the Beatles song for me. I really wanted to like this blend - tin aroma was nice - a definite apricot aroma just as the label says, along with what... Read More
I would call a nutty aroma (probably the caramel). The Winding Road went careening downhill from there. The tobacco was extremely moist and sticky in the tin, so much so that I had a hard time scraping it off the cover card. I found it very hard to light and it was truly impossible to keep lit without puffing constantly which quickly overheated my pipe and gave tongue (and throat and gum and roof of mouth) bite. I've tried every drying and packing method I can come up with to get a good smoke from this, including drying for an hour in the pipe, and letting it sit overnight on a paper towel. Even dry as a bone it would not stay lit without constant puffing, it burns incredibly hot and it still gave nasty tongue bite, plus it lost all its top flavor. It also leaves a nasty chemical coating in my mouth.
If you want a pleasurable tobacco that was truly "designed to bridge the gap between aromatic and English style blends", try Savinelli's new Essenza Cipriota, which is a mild but flavorful blend of Burley, Latakia, Orientals and Virginias with a touch of the grape - a true English Aromatic. As another reviewer said, there is nothing "English" about Winding Road - this "bridge" led me to a dead end in the middle of nowhere. Not worth the effort in my opinion. Read Less

Winding Road to Tongue Bite
October 07, 2014
Product: Ashton Winding Road 50g
There is nothing "English " about this blend. And I certainly would not call it a cross over blend either. It's 100% aromatic and a terrible one at that. Bites the hell out of the smoker and leaves a bad chemical aftertaste. The one star is... Read More
