Palate: As one might assume of it being a lat bomb, it most certainly is not. The initial aroma is definitely oriental and latakia forward, but offers a unique experience. I have never smelled a blend this entrancing. The latakia is not super heavy but provides a nice smokiness, more an oiled leather, musk smoke than a toasty campfire. The Turkish and orientals allow the semi sour and dry, woody aromatic features to shine. What really sets this blend apart is the navy cavendish that offers such a smooth and creamy quality to bring the whole blend together. You'll definitely smell the rum on the blend and taste it, but it doesn't take away from the character, just adds a little class. It's tangy, rustic, sweet and smoky all in one. Not going to win any air freshener contests, but for some like me, I could stick my nose in this all day.
Performance: Like most crumble cakes I smoke, I like to leave some of the pieces in larger chunks and then top it with more rubbed out cake. I feel this provides an effortless smoke that prevents tobacco from reaching your mouth. Burns at a more than moderate pace and tamps down easily. Leaves most of the time no moisture and a lovely grey ash. Mild nicotine hit. Not quite an all day blend, but can be smoked more than once. This was the only blend I have smoked four bowls in a row. The flavor lingers on the roof of your mouth and your clothes and your hair and... well, you get the picture.
Conclusion: I recommend dedicating a pipe to this blend, as you may find that your other pipes could get a slight ghost. This blend is like no tobacco I have had. When you smell Virginia blends, you know what it is. When you smell an English blend, you know what it is. When you smell this blend, your nose runs wild. It's admirable and mysterious but isn't something to be afraid of. Some say that Black Frigate is intimidating, and at first it is, but once you light it up, you will start to understand why this blend is something that you should have tried sooner. I love smoking this on cold rainy days the most. Read Less

use they do indeed soak in rum a portion of the tobacco used for this blend, but then they apply a sickly sweet topping to "seal in" the rum flavor. The result is an undeniably smooth blend with lots of character, some nice interplay between the components, but IMO lacking sufficient oriental leaf. It is a great smoke, and I stock a pound of it in my cellar so I always have some on reserve, but the gooey taffy topping results in the subtraction of a whole star for me. If they would leave off the chemical flavoring agents this would be a five star smoke. It loses still further for me because the chemical agents positively ruin the aroma. Read Less

id it much attention-until now. Soon as I cracked the top of the tin and took a big whiff I knew that I was onto something special. When I first started exploring English blends I thought myself to be a Prequie freak and wasn't too much into Latakia. But that has changed now and I am a big Latakia fan. This has just the right amount of Latakia for me. It's not a Lat bomb but you know it's there. I find the nic hit to be just a little north of medium. It was just a little damp upon opening the tin but it took just about 20 minutes drying couldn't fix. This packs really easy. Did the char light and then it took just one light. Burns cool with rich white smoke and down to nothing but white ash. I have read on TR that this would not be an all day smoke and they may be a little right about that. I could for sure smoke it at least a couple of times during the day. This blend will make it into my rotation and likely reside at one of the top spots. I will order more on my next order. I will not be running out of this blend. It has a 4.5 rating but I could see it as a 4.8 easy. It is IMHO an under rated blend that deserves more attention than it appears to get. Try some I think you will be glad you did. Read Less

The flavor is similar to that of the Pirate Cake, as it is mainly Latakia, but it is easier to enjoy the aroma of the Pirate Cake at its best when it is "hit". To put it simply, it's the kind of leaf that you can easily enjoy the best of Pirate's Cake. If you are looking for a good Latakia leaf, this is the one to buy. This Frigate is heading Full Speed Ahead! Yes, it is a potent mixture with lots of Latakia and Turkish on top of rum soaked Cavendish. For me it is too much for regular enjoyment so I cut it with Newminster Superior Navy Flake. I will order it again
