Cornell & Diehl: Engine #382 2oz Pipe Tobacco

Don’t get me wrong gentleman caller is good but this stuff is amazing. I have a Bing’s favorite dedicated to this blend.

This stuff is great, base flavors are sweet nutty burley , the virinias are subtle but there, the condiment leaves , round out the whole experience, now if youve never tried deer tongue, id absolutely recomend trying a sample at first, while i love this blend and crooner, from what seems deertongue blends are pretty polarizing, either you like em or you dont, i love this blend its flavorful cool smoking and got a medium to just a step past medium nic strength, crooner is great as well but more woodsy and pencil shaving-ish where as this one is more of a va-bur blend with some condiments, this one is a winner but not for everyone...Read More

I have the classic "found my Gramps old Grabow" story of how I started smoking a pipe. His old pipe had a taste and smell that I could never find in any blend. Warm and spicy, not as sweet as GC, could stand more Deer tongue, but not harsh.
Changed my mind, going to be keeping it around, it's warm and spicy but not harsh and overwhelming.
A great morning smoke.

This stuff is fantastic if you have been initiated. If you are familiar with the magical condiment leaf, you will love Engine #382. It is a bit more complex than might be called for as a first introduction, but if you are already acquainted with deertongue, this one is a winner.

High on deer tongue! Burley is the engineer in this blend with the deer tongue and other tobaccos as passengers. Lighter deer tongue taste than the other CD blends but just as pleasant. Trouble ahead, lady in red!!

All the other components together can't seem to balance the bitter unprocessed burley in this blend, which makes for a less than pleasant flavor experience. The aroma isn't as pleasant as New Market, either. Ah, well.

Now back in the day, I smoked a good bit of tobacco with Deer Tongue leaf. Frankly, I can't remember the last time I had it, and not sure why I stopped. I think tobacco companies found a cheaper substitute along the way and it just stopped being made into blends. Bag note is fragrant and sweet. Now Deer Tongue leaf has the same chemical as Tonquin, coumarins. And as someone who lived in the South Pacific for a good while, it's also a home remedy for malaria. Unfortunately, they drink it in a tea, if they smoked it, it would keep the damn skeeters away in the first place, but I digress.
In this blend the Burley takes center stage, the Cavendish and Virginia come in and the Deer Tongue is blended as a Latakia. In the background, not overpowering. Nicely done.
Now, I smoked this in a clay pipe, I would imagine that Deer Tongue would most likely ghost a briar like a Poltergeist, so be warned.

Got mine after a short wait..but yes,I definitely agree..deer tongue has a raw herby,almost vanilla essence..reminds me of the country smells of burning leaves and weeds etc,along with what I can best describe as the smell of tropical fish food...(strange I know)..I detect no other aro flavors...other 'bacco tastes are excellent ..great Burley and Perique.I like the blend...I'm sure mine is young...so gonna age a bit..nic hit is just above medium...more if pushed...another C&D blend that continues to make me a C&D fan...this seems like a good keeper to age......Read More

I bought this tobacco because it was listed as the Virginia Family Blends. However, when I smoked it, I could barely taste the sweetness of Virginias. This blend is heavy on Burley with a hint of Deertongue, Perique and Virginia. I could not detect any Black Cavendish or Vanilla flavor. It burns cool with no bites.
