I grabbed up one pound of this more than a year ago, elsewhere (P&C), and have been trying this (daily) over the past week or so. The blend definitely sits in the English realm, at first. But even though it is mentioned to have "enough Latakia to pull ol' #99 up a mountain grade,' it pushes the boundary of a Balkan; with the oriental seemingly forward most of the time; at least this is what I detect. Moving on...if I draw in wisps (which I recommend), rather than drawing aggressively/deeply, the traditional English/Balkan flavors are there and are quite enjoyable. Aggressive drawing can become a bit bitey, especially in the 'retro-hale' with some sting. This blend is a producer of clouds though so, yes, expect clouds. Anyhow, I'm torn between rating this good (4.0★) or excellent (5.0★) at the moment. So I'm sticking right in the middle for now. Although I'm keeping the bookmark, for this, in my *Best* Folder; for future purchases....Read More

Engine #99 has become one of my Top 5 Desert Island tobaccos. Sip it slowly and gently to allow the interplay between the various flavors to develop. You won’t be disappointed. The more I smoke this, the better it gets. Should age well. Buy it by the pound! There’s nothing not to like with this blend. Highly Recommend. Easily 5 Stars!...Read More

.... and that's not a bad thing. Nice room note. I love the smoky and spicy flavors and they stay consistent all the way to the end. Excellent in the morning with a strong French Roast. Definitely keeping this one in stock.

This is one of the first tobaccos i ordered not from smoking pipes but another site we wont mention. The blend is very smokey and almost has a touch of a salty flavor, you also get a small but nice and balanced IMO bit of spice for me its a nice all day blend great to smoke whilst im driving to work, on break, or anytime i want a good smoke....Read More
Intriguing, if somewhat redundant, spin on a familiar idea...

I confess myself a little torn on these Latakia bombs from C&D. With all due respect to Jeremy and CO's formidable prowess (and to be clear I smoke mostly C&D blends these days so this is in no way a criticism), the company's been described elsewhere here as the Chinese restaurant of pipe tobacco, focused on a wide variety of menu items that in reality differ very little from one another, which is an apt description and this blend is a case in point. Is it bad? No, in fact it's quite tasty - rich, smoky, strong, with some interesting nuance from the interplay of the burley, orientals, and perique. Is it that different from their other Lat bomb offerings? No, to the point of redundancy. I'm a tobacco nerd and blend my own stuff from whole leaf, so I like comparing and contrasting, exploring subtle flavor differences, and the like, and Engine #99 certainly makes for an interesting side by side analysis with the other Lat bombs from C&D (the sweet tea-like aftertaste from what I assume is an interplay between the burley and virginias is particularly noteworthy on this one, for some reason), but its also similar enough that I see no reason to keep it around over any of the others. Unless you're an uber-nuance nerd I doubt you'd notice much of a difference between this, Byzantium, and Pirate Kake, and in reality thanks to the orientals, perique, and burley it tastes basically like a combination of the two, to my palate at any rate. Is it nice? Sure. But its similar enough to Byzantium and Pirate Kake (both of which I prefer over this, particularly Byzantium thanks to its clean, streamlined flavor profile) that I see no need to keep it around. Still, if you like Lat bombs and are looking for a good warm weather puffer with a good hit of Vitamin N you're golden, so by all means give it a go. You won't be disappointed, and that sweet-tea aftertaste is lovely so more than worth the time......Read More
