About This Pipe Tobacco

Manufactured in a century-old brick building in picturesque Lauenburg, Germany, Dan pipe tobacco has gained quite a worldwide reputation among smokers, with a wide variety of blends and cuts on offer. Andreas Mund became the successor in charge of production when master blender Jürgen Westphal retired, and is assisted by Heiko Behrens as well as Michael Apitz of Dan Pipe.

Part of the American History series of pipe mixtures, Midnight Ride from Dan Tobacco commemorates Paul Revere's famous ride on April 18th, 1775. It offers Virginia varietals from three of the finest growing regions, combined with Oriental tobaccos, Cyprian Latakia, and a bit of Perique in a pleasant ribbon cut to deliver a classic English mixture — the perfect homage to America's tobacco tradition.

Ive never smoke a tobacco and thought "wow this is a bit dry" until i smoked this. Its really hard to place my finger on it. And i dont mean that the tobacco is physically dry, or too moist and needs drying time. No. I mean its like a dry beer "dry". Like asahi or something. It tastes dry. I like the flavor of this one. No heat, steady constant flavor, not up and down with good taste, then gone with an acrid, sour replacement for flavor. Gentle tamping and I never had to relight. This is now in my favorites list.

The two reviews below mine are likely not the most accurate. I don't normally pass comments on other responses, but they're both very different cases. This is a wonderful and refined English blend. The latakia isn't heavy, but is definitely noticeable. The perique is just peeping out. Of course the orientals are subtle and delicate. What I like about the tobacco, is that it doesn't arrive wet; it's ready to smoke. The burn is enjoyable and doesn't burn hot, even in a large diameter bowl. I recently opened a tin of Midnight Ride I've had almost 20 years. This blend ages wonderfully. It is somewhat full bodied, complex, smooth and delicious. I will definitely buy more and cellar it. For what it's worth, I do not believe there is any latakia in Midnight Ride.

I don't necessarily dislike this blend, but I don't think it's one I would buy again. I've tried it in two different pipes, a Missouri Meerschaum Country Gentleman and a Savinelli Trevi 320. I get a strong nicotine hit while smoking it. It is sort of spicy to my taste, which is the sensation I get with most latakia and perique blends. It isn't particularly flavorful in my opinion. It is a long ribbon cut, which is fairly dry, and stays lit easily. It has a mild aftertaste which is not unpleasant. There is just nothing about the blend that stands out to me. To me, a blend like Night Cap or Mississippi River is more flavorful and smooth....Read More
