This is nowhere as strong as dark flake or dark plug, and has a weird topping. I can definitely see the resemblance to condor. The first half of the bowl is smooth and sweet. It gets some rough edges about halfway down the bowl. I don't find this nearly as smoky as brown irish X. Nicotine level is similar, maybe a tad more than in the ropes. It seems to have a slight wallflower topping which becomes much more apparent towards the end of the bowl. I almost thought I tasted traces of violet on and off. It has a grassy character as it carries on, the floral becomes more pronounced toward the end of the bowl. Smoother than a lot of the other flakes except at the end. This is a bit of an anomaly as I can't quite finger the topping. No roses or spices, and reminds me of honey. It is nowhere as heavily topped as most of the other lakeland flakes. Smokes best in a smaller bowl. This is not a mild smoke. I would say grasmere is stronger, bosun is about the same, but both of those are much more heavily cased. I am subtracting a star and a half as the topping towards the end tastes like fermented orange peel, wallflower, beer and honey or licorice and isn't particularly appetizing. It does not taste like tobacco. The room note is very aromatic and won't garner any complaints. Smokes a bit wet and needs some drying time. I want to say this tobacco is a little bit odd ultimately but is still good. Has a sweet aftertaste of the topping and something woody. Try it as it might be your new favorite if you like condor....Read More

This is my initial, only a few bowls at the moment, review. I've only recently been able to pick up this (Coniston), Dark Flake Unscented, and Bosun Cut Plug. This one has what I imagine to be the "lakeland effect"...in that it is quite floral for the first few puffs, or 1/4 bowl. But that then becomes a bit muted and it settles in to the flavor to enjoy throughout the rest of the bowl. I am curious to now see what some age might do for it. I'll pull this out, from time to time, and see. As always...I intend to *Update* my reviews each time I revisit a blend....Read More
Quintessential Lakeland

Product: Gawith Hoggarth & Co. Coniston Cut Plug Bulk
This is the perfect, quintessential Lakeland! Pure rose geranium, sweet and floral. I love it! Before I bought it I saw that the descriptions said "lightly flavored" and the reviews said this was milder than its sibling blends, so I thought I wouldn't like it as much as Bosun (my favorite!) and Dark Flake (seemed bland, but maybe my batch didnt have enough sauce) so I only bought 1 ounce. But to my surprise, Coniston (or Ol' Connie as I like to call her!) was exactly the sort of thing I was looking for! So here I am rushing back to rectify my mistake and quickly order some more!...Read More

Product: Gawith Hoggarth & Co. Coniston Cut Plug Bulk
Looking at the holy trinity of the GH dark fired blends (Dark Flake, Coniston, and Bosun -- all mandatory), Coniston is actually the least powerful blend. The dark fired VIRGINIA in these blends is very different from DFK; it has the power and richness of a well-aged cigar without the aggressive alkalinity of air-cured leaf. Indeed, these blends are all as good as the finest cigar you've ever smoked! As to Coniston in particular, there is a lightly-applied dose of some Lakeland clove-like toppings, although not nearly as intense as the rose/clove toppings on the heady brew of Bosun Cut. If you find that Bosun or Dark Flake are just a little too much for you, Coniston is probably just about right. Preparing these flakes is key; they tend to rub out to long, ropey strands. I like to rub them out then use a weed/spice grinder to chop them down into a finer cut. Let it dry a bit, gravity fill, and smoke it low and slow, and you'll be in heaven....Read More
