A simple as can be, Captain Black is a straight, pure, 100% black Cavendishes aromatic, providing plenty of flavor and sweetness, though with a fuller body as well, thanks to the use of Green River Burley as one of the source leafs involved in the creation of its Cavendish components.
Along with Captain Black: Royal, Dark is one of my favorite Captain Black tobaccos. It is my go-to when I'm in the mood for a Black Cavendish. I guess most pipe smokers who enjoy Black Cavendish have tried Lane Limited: BCA, which makes that a great ... Read Morecomparison tobacco. Dark is different in several ways. For starters, Dark is rarely as wet and gooey, which is not to say it isn't moist, most Black Cavendishes are, but it lacks the over saturation. Without the goop, Dark manages the mechanics of packing and lighting much better too. Dark is also a substantially fuller smoking experience. Since it is made from Green River Burley, it gives you a more robust and hearty feeling both in mouth-feel and billowing smoke. Dark also has a slightly different flavor than most Black Cavendishes. Most who've tried it will tell you it's got a vanilla flavor or maybe caramel, and that may be true, but I think the Cavendish process brings out a natural sweetness that is often mistaken for vanilla. I've always detected a dark chocolate aroma and taste with Dark. It's not like milk chocolate; it is more like Dutch cocoa powder used in making chocolate cake or brownies...very rich. In fact, it has been my experience that the older this tobacco gets, the more pronounced the cocoa flavor becomes. I once found a forgotten pouch of Dark that had waited in a coat pocket for Winter to come around again and I was surprised at how chocolaty it had become (it stayed relatively moist in the pouch too!). Whether you get vanilla or cocoa (or both), Dark is definitely a sweet smoke that should please any aromatic fan. It just happens to please dark chocolate fans (like me) too. Enjoy! Read Less
First off, I like all-cavendish blends, so keep that in mind when you read my comments. This is fairly moist right out of the pouch and will gurgle easily if you don't allow it to dry a bit before smoking.

It takes a lot of effort to get this to bite, and under normal circumstances I never have any issues with that. The flavor is nice, mild, and fairly sweet, but no specific flavor comes to mind. I find that this is best rotated through with other options as it does leave me with a bit of an aftertaste if I have three or more bowls in a row.
Your pipe will smell quite nice after smoking this, but as far as I can tell there is no appreciable ghosting - if I smoke another blend after this there is no hint of it in that bowl, or anytime after. I've smoked this for a week straight an not had any long-term scent or flavor carry-over.
While this is not my favorite all-cavendish tobacco, I do like it fairly well and plan to keep it in my modest selection of tobaccos. Read Less

The aroma is good; light not heavy and akin to stale raisins, white bread and faint leather. It's a good inexpensive tobacco for folks that like to puff a lot, aren't chasing a true tobacco taste, and are mindful of others being offended by the smell of smoking. It smokes incredibly smooth, the smoothest of any tobacco I've ever smoked... I puffed and puffed and it simply wouldn't bite. I'm keeping a large tin as I like the simplicity of the aromatic, the smoothness on the tongue, and the yeasty taste. If you like aromatics, I think you'll like this for the simplicity and smoothness. If you enjoy the complexity of English or Balkans... you might not appreciate the linear taste. Read Less
An enjoyable aromatic that I have shared with new pipe smokers and is universally enjoyed by them. Tin (pouch) note is sweet and pleasant but may be a bit too vanilla for experienced smokers. Room note is favorable to wives and other finicky beings.

As a man who has smoked a pipe for 40 years, I have picked up a couple things that may be helpful to the beginner piper. First, pipe smoking is a personal thing that each person enjoys for different reasons and in different ways. You will read and wa... Read Moretch all these well meaning reviewers tell you how to do this and how to do that, don't smoke this or do smoke that. You smoke what tastes good to you and smoke it whatever way you like. Our grandfathers smoked one pipe. They didn't rotate pipes or tobaccos. They smoked one or two brands because that was all that was available. Was their smoking experience less because they didn't do things "the right way." No, they enjoyed their pipe for a lifetime. Enjoy your pipe or pipes with whatever tobacco or tobaccos that you enjoy and in whatever way you like. Second, one of the best tips I ever got was to drink tonic water or a citrus drink while smoking. It cleans the mouth so you can enjoy every sip of the pipe. Third, you can't go wrong with smoking Captain Black blends. They have been around for a long time and taste just fine. They might not meet the criteria of some smokers, but once again if you smoke it and you like it, don't be afraid to buy it. I started out smoking Captain Black Gold many years ago and still smoke it along with other brands.
