About This Pipe Tobacco

Founded in Kendal, Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. has fashioned quality pipe tobacco since 1887, utilizing processes and techniques that date to 1792. The Cumbria-based company prioritizes natural tobacco flavor, and in many of their mixtures, Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. maintains the standards enforced by the United Kingdom's strict purity laws of the 19th and 20th centuries — such laws dictating how much and what type of flavorings could be added to pipe tobacco and ensuring that sub-quality leaf wasn't hidden under the veil of exorbitant toppings.

Gawith, Hoggarth & Co.'s Westmorland blend is a broken flake comprised of pressed African dark fired tobaccos that yield a cool, satisfying, full flavoured smoke.

This a very rich, full bodied, and pallet pleasing blend.

It has the bold depth and the richness Dark Flake / Dark Plug with bit less strength in the nicotine (horsepower).

Dark Flake / Dark Plug and Westmorland are in my top 5 all time favorite blends.

Westmorland is a bit more
gentle.

I would highly recommend this blend to those who enjoy cigars and or those who favor rustic refined blends that are reminiscent of times past.

As someone who enjoys trying new blends—especially those from GH—I approached this one with high expectations, and it did not disappoint. I gave the flake roughly six hours of drying time until it reached a slightly crispy condition, which seemed to bring out its best qualities.

The flavor pr
ofile is straightforward and honest, showcasing a clean, natural tobacco character. There is just a touch of sweetness lingering in the background, accompanied by delicate floral notes that never become intrusive. The smoke is cool, smooth, and remarkably well-behaved from start to finish. Most notably, it remains gentle on the retrohale, offering flavor without any harshness or bite.

Overall, this is a simple yet satisfying blend that delivers an easygoing and thoroughly enjoyable smoking experience. One I would happily return to

Gawith Hogarth blends have always been my favorite at least a third if not more of my seller is all their blends. Some of my favorites are dark, plug, dark, flake, both unscented and aromatic and brown, flake, both unscented and aromatic along with pretty much all of their other flakes. I suppose this is the first time having Westminster slices and it does not disappoint. Kind of reminds me of a mix between brown and dark, flake unscented it’s another very clean tobacco. The flavor is that bold but still mild smoky dark fire taste somewhat meaty like barbecue as with dark plug and some of their other fine robes like Brown bogey, brown, Irish twist and black and I love that little bit of Lakeland if you like Gawith Hogarth products this is another one I recommend. The best flavors I got from any of their blends have been from bent billiard some pot shapes, and a couple meerschaum I have dedicated for only those dark fire barbecue meat flavors. Cheers everyone!!!...Read More
Full marks for tobacco, with rich and full-bodied aroma.

This tobacco blend from GH doesn’t carry that heavy, acrid aftertaste that often lingers with string-cut tobaccos, and its strength starts off surprisingly mild on the first draw. Right after lighting, a rich, toasty grilled aroma unfolds softly, with a subtle, fresh briny note that evokes the crisp air of a lakeside cutting through the smokiness. Moving into the midsection, a distinct floral bloom emerges—delicate yet persistent, weaving perfectly into the growing depth of the blend. As you reach the final third, that signature complex bouquet unique to GH steps forward, layering perfectly without ever feeling overwhelming. From start to finish, the progression of flavors is thoughtful, well-balanced, and constantly engaging, with no rough edges or bitter harshness at any stage. For me, this is truly a perfect full-score tobacco....Read More

At some point I’m going to have to create a chart of the various Gawith Hoggarth flakes, cut plugs, and slices—sometimes the differences are subtle, sometimes they’re obvious.

Whatever the case, this is one of the most finely balanced of the bunch. I’m glad SmokingPipes is clear about the in
gredients: despite the use of “dark fired,” this is a pure Virginia blend much like the majority of Gawith ropes. Dark-fires Virginia shares some of the flavors you’d find in Dark-Fired Kentucky (which I also love), but there’s more of a grilled meat flavor (DFV) than outright barbeque (DFK).

The toppings here are absolutely recognizable as “Lakeland” (to me that means floral, semi-pungent, perfume), and they’re aren’t light—but they’re perfectly applied to allow that meaty, oily tobacco flavor to come through.

Drying is helpful for an easy light, but I think it’s important to avoid losing the flavors that come from the moist flake. What I do is dry some overnight (or even for a day or more) and rub that out into kindling. Then I tear a fresh slice lengthwise into short “sticks” that are just shorter than the bowl’s depth. I pack these loosely, standing up in the bowl, then sprinkle kindling around the edges and on top. Works great and produces a reliable burn and a ton of flavor.

One other note: I’m sensitive to some Virginias, which bite me no matter how slowly I try to smoke them. This one doesn’t bite me. Ever.

5 stars. A treat for Lakeland veterans like me and a great introduction for people just dipping their toe into this type of blend.
