Very confused

This is supposed to be a strong blend with lots of body, flavor, and nicotine. This five-year tin has none of those things. No body, no flavor, no nicotine. Pros: At times there is a pleasant bready-ness dancing in and out. The bottom third of the bowl is usually malty and toasty whereas most others are muddy and often taste like cheap cigarettes at the bottom. The perique gives some detectable umami notes, which I find rather rare, even in blends with perique. The latakia, in the few moments when it becomes detectable, is not bad. Cons: too wet out of the tin; difficult to light; far too mellow, no body whatsoever, just gurgle and steam; not exciting or lively or even flavorful; no Virginia sweetness, no sour or incense-like Oriental notes, just altogether bland, flat, and uninteresting. I am so confused. Man, I had expected magic from these tins after waiting five years to open one. The result is a disappointment. I hope this is temporary. Perhaps if I leave it in the jar for a month or two it will liven up, reintroduced oxygen and all that. Maybe if I leave the ribbons out to dry for a few hours before smoking the flavors will finally join us. If nothing improves, the rest of these tins are going to the bottom of my cellar or on a consignment website. What a letdown....Read More

Ashton Artisan’s Blend is exactly what I look for in a rich, full bodied English mixture. The Latakia is deep and smoky without completely taking over, while the Orientals bring a dry, woody spice and the Virginias provide just enough natural sweetness to keep everything balanced. The touch of Perique adds a pleasant peppery depth that becomes more noticeable as the bowl develops. There’s plenty of flavor here, but it remains composed rather than becoming heavy or muddled. This is definitely geared toward someone who enjoys a more substantial English blend. It burns beautifully as a ribbon and delivers a cool, flavorful smoke from the first light through the bottom of the bowl.
