Dan Tobacco: The Mallard 50g Pipe Tobacco

Product Number: 003-293-0032

Manufactured in a century-old brick building in picturesque Lauenburg, Germany, Dan pipe tobacco has gained quite a worldwide reputation among smokers, with a wide variety of blends and cuts on offer. Andreas Mund became the successor in charge of production when master blender Jürgen Westphal retired, and is assisted by Heiko Behrens as well as Michael Apitz of Dan Pipe.

The Mallard from Dan Tobacco is a pure Virginia ribbon-cut mixture featuring Virginias from Zambia, all carefully fermented and aged. With no added flavorings, it highlights the natural sweetness and richness of Virginia tobaccos.

Definitely A Nice Blend!

Product: Dan Tobacco The Mallard 50g
Intrigued by the tin art, I did not expect the quality contained in it. The Mallard combines quality Virginias with a simple but very satisfying smoke profile.Mild, sweet, hay, grassy, toasty bread with zesty undertones with nice balance. A cool smoke without any bite that is suitable for an all day smoke!A great candidate for aging and a worthy find indeed....Read More
This is a medium, unimpressive light Virginia tobacco

This is a medium, unimpressive light Virginia tobacco. Perhaps I am not too biased since I smoked this tobacco before, but with Perique - it was definitely good.

Comparable to C&D Carolina Red Flake and just about as rare. Ready to smoke from a freshly opened tin. Tin note is very low key. It’s ready rubbed but can benefit from a little extra rubbing to facilitate an easy burn. As best I can tell, it’s an unadulterated high grade straight Virginia tobacco. Took a bit of extra effort to get it going but once lit, it burned consistently. Nice mild Virginia flavor and pleasant aroma as it’s smoked. I’m trying it first in a Nording Compass to see how a small bowl works and I’m guessing it’ll do better in a larger pipe. No bite and no other obnoxious issues, just a nice clean and easy smoke. Looks like I got the last two tins, I’ll be saving one of them for future use....Read More

The Mallard delivers on everything it promises! A fantastically sweet yet mellow Virginia with no bite! Perfect as an all day smoke with a very pleasant sweet toasted bread room-note. Perfect for a fishing trip on a lazy summer afternoon! Burns cool.

The Mellow Mallard is a nice simple virginia offering that smokes fine. Unfortunately the cut, a rather broken flake style, is not perfect to deliver the taste that wafts out of the tin.
Could be special, quality leaves something to be desired.

Dan tobacco, a venerable old company, seems to make good tobacco in general. The Mellow Mallard is no exception, and behind the Roper's, is my favorite. This tobacco bills itself (no pun intended) as an all-day smoker. That it is, but for the one problem that seems to haunt all Dan products: Bite. Now a VA isn't supposed to have bite. I think Dan tops them just a little more than they should with...something. Don't get me wrong, this is definitely a natural VA. It's got all the great notes of a VA, turned down a bit. Straw, maybe a lemony citrus, and a wine/honey/caramel sweetness, with not a lot of spice (maybe black pepper?). But I can't smoke this all day because of palate exhaustion. I've tried old tins, new tins, medium tins... it doesn't seem to fade with age. It's certainly not a LOT of bite (just a nip, really), but for me that removes it from the category of true all-dayers. It might be that I am having a reaction to a component that Dan uses (it's possible), but I feel, after smoking many tins of this, that in the end it comes down to quality of the leaf. In its favor, it is quite as mellow as described, not too sweet, and the cut is FABULOUS. Definitely worth a try, but after this last tin I may have to go hunting (pun intended) again for my all day, no-problem smoke. R...Read More
Amazing Virginia, aromatic?

Product: Dan Tobacco The Mallard 50g
I bought this recently I'll admit for the tin art. I wanted it for my wall and it sat in my cellar for about 3 months. Popped the tin and it smelled like any Virginia. Opened up the wrapping and noticed to my delight sugar blume here and there across the top. This tobacco wasn't what I was expecting absolutely delicious and not a trace of flavoring or topping. If this ever comes back in I will be stocking up big time and putting it my main rotation...Read More
Non-aromatic pure Virginia taste.

Product: Dan Tobacco The Mallard 50g
This is a mild rubbed-out Virginia flake with a quintessential Va taste: slightly grassy, but not sharp; just enough citrus zest to detonate your salivary glands; and a wine-like sweetness that doesn't mask the tobacco flavor. I'll recommend this the next time someone asks me to name a benchmark Virginia tobacco. The only knock, IMO, is the price -- but it should be on every Va lover's short list of blends to try. High quality NON-aromatic....Read More
Solid VA smoke

Product: Dan Tobacco The Mallard 50g
Yes, the tin says "aromatic", but this is a straight ready-rubbed VA/Bur flake tobacco, and a pretty good one at that. Not as full a smoke as most of my other VA stash (FVF & HOTW, mostly), it is very mellow and smooth, with a pleasant "room note" that gets approving nods from smokers & non-smokers alike. Does require a bit of drying upon opening, but it's an easy smoke, and I've yet to experience any tongue bite. Overall, a rather pleasant "change of pace" tobacco, and one that I'll be stocking up on for sure....Read More
