About This Pipe Tobacco

The basic tobaccos of Black Mallory are Virginia, Black Cavendish, and Latakia. Carefully apportioning of the quantities of seasoning leaf brings about a dark full-bodied mixture. A notable tobacco from Rattray's.

Fantastic blend, robust but simple

Product: Rattray's Black Mallory 50g
Right away I was hit with robust smells from the tin. A deep and rich scent had be excited to pack my 320.
This smoked perfectly right from a fresh cracked tin.
Already planning to stuff a few tins to age, I love this stuff.
Good generic English with Cavendish

It is pretty decent English mix as far as I concerned.
Intermix of Virginias with Orientals provide base for this blend. Virginias provide dark fruit sweetness and a bit of tanginess. Orientals provide spice, herbal, and incense like overtones. Latakia present throughout but it is no latakia bom
b by any means. Cavendish is more of condiment to smooth the blend which it does a bit too much IMHO.
The blend is not pipe dependent at all. Tastes the same both in briar and meerschaum pipes of all sizes and shapes.
As far as I concerned it is good generic English with Cavendish. Nothing really stands out, nothing attracts any attention. There are other English blends I like much more.

Definitely reminds me of Slices without the anise. Love the play of the cavendish and latakia! Will buy more in the future
Very dry

Don't know if I got a bad tin or what, but I found this to be very dry, almost as dry as Semois burley offerings...that alone would cause me to toss it if i can't rehydrate it.
The saving grace is how tasty I found it as I really, really don't like English blends with Latikia that overwhelm the o
ther tobacco in the blend and this does not though I'll probably blend this with a little HGL for a small change in flavor profile.
Thinking I'll jar 50g of the tin and experiment with the rest just because I can.
The best I can forsee is smoking a bowl of this every couple of weeks and slowing down my cadence as the dryness makes it burn really hot.

Best Standard English

Product: Rattray's Black Mallory 500g
Very good, very different. So refreshing to take a break from the G.L.Pease/Drucquer/C&D=Laudisi monopoly. Relatively full bodied without coating the tongue and palate. Smoky and spicy, sour, and also very sweet without a cloying, fake taffy topping. Also, the antimicrobial used by all of Laudisi's companies seems delightfully lesser in quantity if not entirely absent here....Read More
