Samuel Gawith was the son-in-law of Thomas Harrison, a snuff manufacturer who moved his trade and equipment to Kendal, Cumbria, England from Scotland in 1792. Gawith inherited this equipment from Harrison, and the company has been crafting premium tobacco since, with one of Samuel's two sons continuing the brand while the other joined with Henry Hoggarth to establish Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Though offering separate blends, both brands remain forever linked and still share the same manufacturing facility in England's Lake District, utilizing processes and techniques that date to the brands' 1792 roots. In many of their mixtures, Samuel Gawith maintains the standards enforced by the United Kingdom's strict purity laws of the 19th and 20th centuries — such laws dictating how much and what type of flavorings could be added to pipe tobacco and ensuring that sub-quality leaf wasn't hidden under the veil of exorbitant toppings.

One of Samuel Gawith's oldest blends, Commonwealth is an English blend composed entirely of Virginias and Latakia, foregoing the use of Orientals in many other English mixtures. It makes for a bold, full-bodied smoking experience with just the right amount of spice and sweetness.

Not much flavor and won't stay lit !

This should be served with gasoline on the side as this blend just won't stay lit ! Poor smoke production and requires too many relights. Very wet out of the tin. First time I dried it for a couple of hours - didn't help but plenty of tongue bite. Second time I left it for a full day. No improvement aside from less bite. For reference, I rarely, if ever, need to re-light my pipe while smoking my preferred blends. This one would just not burn. And on top of that, the flavor is very subdued, nothing to write home about. Glad that I've only bought a single tin. Most likely I won't finish it....Read More

Tin note of mildly sour, tart, and smoky. This brown, tan, black, mostly ribbon cut tobacco is relatively dry and needs no prep. Burns moderately with few relights. The strength is medium and nic is mild. No flavoring detected. Taste is medium to full and consistent, with notes smoky, earth, floral, leather, spicy retro and some sweet notes. This tobacco has been at the top of my list since I first smoked it almost 20 years ago. I'd only been a pipe smoker for a few years, and had suffered through a variety of perfumed and sweetened tobaccos of questionable quality. When I started smoking commonwealth, it brought a whole new joy to pipe smoking. It's very well behaved, produces predictable results, can be relit repeatedly, smoked hard or light without losing its voluminous texture and great taste. It smells like wood smoke, which I personally love. Like a hickory note almost. The flavour is sweet, spicy and buttery smooth. This is a tobacco that works well for those who frequently pocket a lit pipe, as I used to do. The smell is not identifiable by most as tobacco, which allowed me to get away with pocketing the pipe, walking through a building, pulling it back out and continuing to smoke without a relight. What an amazing blend. For one boasting a 50% concentration of Latakia, I was expecting something totally different. Besides from how well the Va and Lat intermingle, there’s a savory rich and salt like essence that is like they aged the tobacco by the sea collecting flavors of the ocean!

I love a lot of heavy Latakia Blends such as , gaslight,pirate kake, da Vinci ,And Nightcap to name a few. This is heavy in Latakia but it's different and not a smack in the face like you might expect. It's smooth,sweet and Creamy Smoke. I can't get enuff of it since cracking open the Tin.
