About This Pipe
Formerly known as the American Pipe Making Exposition, our annual Global Pipe Making Exposition features contributions from some of the world's foremost artisans, all united around a central theme. One of the most exciting events of the year for carvers, smokers, and enthusiasts of briar alike, the Global Exposition acts not only as a showcase for the immense talent of these artisans but a focus for the boundless creativity that these masters of the art possess. For 2025, the theme of our Expo is "In Memoriam," celebrating the life and works of artisans who have passed on, yet whose impact on the craft and those around them is utterly undeniable.
Emiliano is well-regarded today for his intricate shaping, meticulous engineering, and sophisticated finishes. His designs are heavily influenced by Danish pipe-making aesthetics, typically showcasing classic, symmetrical forms with a contemporary artistic flourish. When adding accents, he focuses on using natural materials, ensuring each piece embodies both beauty and functionality, with a touch of organic flair. His Expo contribution, the Elf Sphinx, is a tribute to Bo Nordh, one of the most influential figures in modern pipe making.
Nordh was central to the Scandinavian artisan movement of the 1970s, working alongside famed makers such as Sixten Ivarsson. He is renowned for a variety of signature shapes, such as the Nautilus, Ramses, and Sphinx, and is credited with pioneering a grain-focused approach to shaping that continues to influence craftsmen today. Emiliano's piece draws from that legacy, combining respect for form with attention to grain and detail.
In the Elf Sphinx, Emiliano merges his own signature shape with one of Nordh's most iconic: the Sphinx. Defined by a crisp ridgeline that bisects the bowl horizontally and culminates in a sharply articulated, spur-like heel, the Sphinx is both architectural and organic. Emiliano's Elf, by contrast, is a dynamic reimagining of the bent Egg, characterized by flowing lines and a forward-surging momentum. The result is a measured blend of Nordh's structural precision and Emiliano's expressive energy.
In this creation, Emiliano has taken the original Sphinx design and elongated it, crafting a profile that closely resembles the Elf. He maintains the same graceful flow characteristic of the Elf while incorporating a bowl shape reminiscent of the Sphinx. This design features a soft, convex front wall that fits well within the profile of the Elf, allowing it to have a similar look in profile to Emailano's original design. Where the Sphinx is coveted as a shape is in its expression of grain, and here Emiliano does this masterfully, completely showcasing the grain in a manner similar to Nordh's. This piece features front-oriented grain, with birdseye encapsulating the fore and back wall, while the flanks feature cross grain throughout — a standard feature of the Sphinx.
Emiliano added a unique touch to this design by extending the shank with six evenly spaced knuckles of dark brown bamboo, reflecting his affinity for organic materials. Each bamboo knuckle features an inlay of Jupati, a Brazilian palm wood, which pays tribute to Emiliano's Brazilian roots. Furthermore, an additional section of Jupati is intricately inlaid on the back of the bowl, complementing the birdseye grain with its swirling pattern. This is a unique, intimate detail that allows the fortunate smoker to fully appreciate its charm.
