About This Pipe
Originally from Jacksonville, Florida, Micah Redmond's artistic inclinations led him to explore pipe making as a creative outlet, eventually transforming a hobby into a serious craft. Now an established artisan, Redmond's style is characterized by supple curves and hearty proportions, yet his designs often remain compressed, reminiscent of the compact musculature often seen in American pipe making. While this long-shanked Egg is something of an outlier due to its extended length, the bowl remains characteristically squat and compact, shaped with plump curvature and a pronounced forward cant.
The transition immediately draws the eye, featuring subtle shaping that remains open and fluid. It lends a gentle sense of momentum to the aft walls of the bowl while naturally initiating the lines of the elongated shank. Said shank dominates the profile, guiding the eye through the composition and showcasing striking ring grain along its length. The design culminates in a domed saddle stem of resin, its rounded shoulders pairing well with the pipe's overall proportions.
A crisp sandblast and warm auburn stain highlight stacked growth rings across the bowl's flanks, while the rim and a trim accent band at the junction are left smooth for contrast. The result is a handsome and dynamic piece from Redmond — full of character, with an engaging profile and a unique stem.
