With 50% Latakia, you might stay away... but don't! Cornell & Diehl really nailed it with Star of the East. What I really enjoy is how easy it is to smoke. There's plenty of that wonderful smoky Latakia character, while the Orientals add just enough spice and complexity and the Virginia brings a touch of natural sweetness to round everything out. For me, this isn't just an "after dinner by the fireplace" blend. I could happily smoke Star of the East throughout the day. Morning coffee? Yep. Afternoon pipe? Absolutely. Evening wind-down? Perfect. It burns nicely, stays interesting all the way down the bowl, and doesn't require a special occasion. Sometimes you just want to load a pipe, light it up, and think, "Yep…that's good tobacco." Star of the East has officially earned a spot in my regular rotation. I love a good english blend but tend to veer away from "lat: bombs. This was a pleasant exception. Latakia I like used condimentally but the balance with the oriental and Virginia make it an exception for me with my bias against lat bombs. I must try the flake now. I smoke this one around 2:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. in the very early morning. A great way to end any stressful day. The last half of the bowl gives me the "everything is going to be alright" feeling. No other smoke does this for me. Peace be with you. Randall S.

This stuff is amazing. The Latakia is up front and personal in this tobacco, with the Orientals playing second fiddle just loud enough to be heard. The Virginias are there too in the back, adding just a subtle sweetness. I enjoy the beef jerky smokiness of the Latakia. I smoke this blend mostly in a clay pipe, but I have smoked it in cobs and briars as well. I feel as if the clay pipe just gives you a chance to actually taste this fine blend. This is an English blend that is well balanced. The tobacco is dry to the touch, but lights and smokes well. This is a great option for an all day English, if you're in the market for one. The tin note is definitely English, but the room note is light, smokey and sweet. Smoking this in a crowd, I have had no complaints and have instead had people ask me what I was smoking because the smell was go inviting and not off-putting. This is a blend that I keep on hand and remains a main staple in my rotation....Read More
