I close my eyes and imagine being on ship, sea breeze and salt spray in the face with sun beating off the deck with the smell of the deck planks and a pipe burning. This is it! I close my eyes, smoke this leaf, and imagine being back in the Med. You def get the burley in this one. I sometimes get the brandy, and the perique peaks through consistently and lightly. Picking out the chocolate and black walnut is all too easy in this blend, but enjoyable. I don't think it an all day smoke, but definitely a smoke for hot days. This is not my usual 1st pick type of blend. I was looking to take a short break from my normal straight Virginia or VaPer routine. I keep a big tub of Carter Hall for these occasions (and always will) but was tobacco surfing on the website and came across Barbary Coast on sale. I snatched up a big tin to try. I must say, this was a great surprise. Very mellow. You can pick up on all the tobaccos, the blend percentages are very well balanced, easy smoking mixture. Very smooth, no bite, but it is also peppery. This is way better than PS41 Cube Cut for my taste. The mix of cube cut, ribbon, and broken flake makes it very easy to pack and light. Minimal relights needed. Straightforward white burley taste (yum chocolate) for the most part, but the subtle topping along with the perique and red VA add enough complexity you can smoke it all day. I would smoke it in a medium to wide bowl so you get a good mix lit. The perique can hit you like wasabi in a narrow cob! Would order again....Read More

So I just ordered this, it’s a blend. I haven’t tried in years. The last time I tried it it was a complete cube cut., good flavor, absolute harder and hell to keep lit. I noticed a recent picture of it online and I see a considerable amount of ribbon tobacco in it. I also noticed the recent reviews and no one says anything about having trouble keeping it lit. All of that considered I’m assuming something has changed since the last time I smoked it kind of excited to get it. Ok… upon receiving this tin, i opened it abruptly and discovered its true. The cube cut is finer and i would say about 10 percent ribbon cut mixed in. The topping is definitely less pronounced as well. That said, the burn is much better. Previously it could be fireproof. The brandy rounds out the blend nicely all the way top to bottom. I would say overall it’s improved burn is a fair compromise for less flavor....Read More

I love the flavor. I smoke the pirates out of this blend to color my meerschaums. I don’t know why it works so well. It has brandy in it. And, when alcohol is used for cleaning the tobacco chamber in meers, it destroys the pipe’s ability to color. However, apparently, when used as a tobacco additive, it enhances the ability to color. IDK? But, in my experience Barbary Coast has worked this way. Please, look into alcohol and meerschaum before taking this review to your collection, though. It works for me.
