The "Naked" Base Leaf Review
July 10, 2026
Product: Peterson Irish Cask 50g
The casing had completely evaporated from my tin before opening, so I essentially smoked the base tobacco "naked"—and it is outstanding.

Unlike many blends that use a top note to hide mediocre tobacco, Irish Cask relies on a premium, robust foundation. It delivers a rich, deeply satisfying, e
arthy smoke with a solid nicotine backbone and a natural rustic sweetness. It burns beautifully, though in heavy ambient humidity the last third can get damp enough that you may have to toss the dottle early.

If the base leaf is this exceptionally good entirely on its own merits, a fresh tin with the casing intact can only be spectacular. Highly recommended for those who appreciate real tobacco flavor.

Just Okay

Easy to light and smoke. The tobacco is mild to the point that the woody cask flavor is what comes out in front. I was very concerned at first that my briar was burning but it tastes the same in a cob. Not bad but 1 tin was enough for me.

Plain, boring blend

Product: Peterson Irish Cask 50g
I second the other reviewer on here calling this a fairly boring blend. The tin aroma smells like a VaPer to me. Can’t tell that this was aged in sherry casks by the tin note or the taste. It just tasted like a cheap Virginia blend to me. Had to constantly relight because it wouldn’t stay lit....Read More

I am beginner piping and this is my second tobacco I tasted; I really enjoyed the experience smoking it. The flavor was between wine and whisky and smell so good!
