The room note is so pleasant that anyone who complains about it is just plain being a freakish, high-minded wood tick. Good for beginners because 1-Q doesn't take a lot of fuss to enjoy. It's a good one with which to learn to pack a pipe because I've always found it easy to light and also forgiving if I don't get the pack quite right, and we do tend to learn from our mistakes where packing a pipe is concerned. And, you'll get a good Virginia tobacco flavor along with the light sweetness of the casing. Good for advanced pipe smokers too because, having worked at a local tobacconist for a couple of years after college, this was far and away our best seller to young and old pipe smokers as well as our most common ingredient in blending. It's a smooth, lightly sweet flavored tobacco without being overpowering on the tongue. That light sweetness feels natural to the tobacco too, not heavy as with some other cased products like the cherry or whiskey flavored aromatics, nothing against them. An excellent choice with which to begin your pipe smoking odyssey, and you'll likely return to it again and again as well, as one does with an old and trusted friend. P.S. They definitely hit the bull's-eye with this. Crumbled two coins and smoke away. Great flavours. Always love when the blenders find a balance. I did find I had to nurse it a bit, but nothing major. I wasn't sure wuite what to expect with a blend claiming 50% Latakia. I mean, I like Latakia, but would I like it THAT much? The short answer is yes! THe Lat here is very well-behaved but definitely the star of the show. Turkish (Izmir?) backs up the campfire smokiness with a cooling, floral note, while the VA comes into play infrequently for me (though I suspect I'd notice if it wasn't there to sweeten things up slightly). Packed, lit and burned perfectly. First light is all Latakia, with the Turkish coming into play part way through the bowl. Aftertaste is surprisingly clean and short-lived, and the room note is lighter and cleaner than one might expect as well. This tobacco became a daily smoker for awhile, and only recently really pinpointed why. I am a huge fan of the Three Nuns, and this Tobacco is a pretty good imitation. It’s not as strong as I would have liked, though not saying it was a good nicotine hit. The natural sweatness compensates for where this tobacco falls short. This was a nice dry cool smoke, which was a great plus compared to my last batch of Three Nuns. I will be ordering again. Read Less

Update: After trying GH Bob's Chocolate Flake, I find that Luxury Twist Flake has a topping that's quite similar - sans the Lakeland essence. This is a great flake with a beautiful presentation; LTF does not disappoint. On the other hand, it is probably not going to please Virginia purists with such a distinctive casing. The pouch/tin note smells like powdered hot cocoa mix and fresh-baked bread. Its room note is pleasant as well. Preparation is easy, and behavior is good. Whether you choose to rub it to ribbons or fold-&-stuff, it's hard to mess this one up. The smoke is creamy, with a flavor that's mildy sweet with hints of cocoa and brown sugar, and I find it to be almost entirely bite-free. Additionally, the nicotine level is very low—even a big pipe of this on an empty stomach wont make you dizzy or ill, making it a very agreeable flake. As for aging, blends that are good when fresh—especially Virginias—are a thing of greatness, and this is one of 'em. With that said, it absolutely gets better with age. Still, it's nice to buy fresh flakes and be able to enjoy them as is. LTF is a perfect blend for those who want a Virginia flake with a sweeter twist, and if you liked Luxury Navy Flake, it's likely you'll enjoy this as well. Read Less

Typical English blend appearance with even ribbons of hues from tan to black; bag aroma includes notes of leather, saddle soak or mink oil , smoke, hay, a sense of dust. Composition is Virginia, Latakia, Perique, Burley.

I had a bit of trepidation starting back up the reviews with an English, mainly because Jase I just spent a week smoking blends that had heavy Latakia and dark fired components and I was afraid that I may not appreciate any more subtle aspects of a blend - luckily I was wrong.

By now it’s clear I’m an avowed English blend lover and this one kicks off with great notice that it’s a great example of one variant of the genre. It’s soft. Maybe some would call it an aromatic English, sometimes I see the phrase American English. Whatever you want to call it , BFP is a nice full serving of burley and Latakia , with nicely metered dosages of sweet Virginia and spicy Perique deftly applied.

It makes an oily , semi transparent smoke, and it has a nice room note. As I enjoyed a bowl with a glass of Pinot Noir, I tried to determine what image the blend evoked for me - and I settled on a nice walk through the woods on the backside of our property. It’s got a “go for a walk” kinda vibe.

Sometimes English blends leave just the tip of my tounge feeling like it’s spiced - not so much here. It’s judicious in its profile to be a clever little sipper.

I was looking for a "replacement" for 5100 (as a lot of us have had to do), and I do believe I've found my new daily puff. It has a very good flavor, with many of the old belt attributes ~ especially about half way down the bowl. A mellow, earthy flavor and aroma, with a decent nicotine content. This is a solid red virginia blend; so let's hope this isn't going to go "up in smoke" like so many other red virginias right now. Very tasty stuff. Read Less

This English Balkan is a magical concoction of Latakia, Perique and Orientals. Presents in the bag with colors of khaki, brown, chocolatey brown, and black. Aromas from the bag are a mixture of deep smoke, oak, ketchup.

Sampled in a Missouri Pride.

This is a damn good Balkan. Immediately upon lighting it up you get a nice kick in the nuts from the Latakia telling you “hey I’m here and I run the show”.

Then the spicy Oriental and Perique go on to just beautifully pack the bowl with flavor giving you a very lush and luxurious Balkan experience.

I knew from the jump that this was going to be a five star blend and likely to see a lot of future action for me.

I actually enjoyed several bowls of this blend and can tell you that it paired nicely with a couple of red wines like The Prisoner and Meomi Pinot Noir.

It’s sweet and deep and has those nice nasal warming aromas that remind me of how wasabi kind of clears your sinuses in a flash of heat and then turn sweet on your taste buds. This blend literally made me salivate as I was smoking it.

Although I’m not saying there are anything of the same composition, this blend will easily replace White Horse as one of my go to Balkans as my supply of that blend runs out over time due to it’s no longer being produced.

If you’re a Balkan fan and you haven’t tried it I would recommend you give it a shot.

I know you are supposed to mix it. I mixed mine 50/50. Latakia/latakia. My buddy (Awesome guy) brought this over to try. I filled up my biggest bowl (Missouri Meerschaum General) and smoked it. This was smooth, smokey, silky, and sultry. I am hard-pressed to understand the need to mix it with other stuff, unless you are trying to make it last longer (best guess?). This was a great smoke. I am trying to figure what blends that good use some extra help to use it on... or maybe another straight indulgence. Read Less

I've been pipe-smoking for 45+ years and "grew up" with the OLD Balkan Sobranie, Dunhill 965 and Standard Full, Rattray's Red Rapp and Black Mallory as well as Bengal Slices, State Express, etc. While I have found nothing like these old blends, some of todays are very smoke-able. This, however, raises the bar to another level. If you have been lamenting the old/good stuff, this is worthy of your attention! Ok, one bowl of RLP-6 was enough to make me a fan of this blend! I know I'll need more time with it to get to really know it, but my first impressions are very favorable. Many of the other reviews of this blend mention flavors like vanilla, nougat, chocolate, and various fruit. I guess I could taste some of these things, like the vanilla, but more than anything I was tasting caramel, something rather creamy, some nuttiness, and banana. Especially banana! No kidding. Banana! I didn't see any other reviews here or elsewhere mention a banana flavor. Maybe it's just me. Banana... Hmmmm... Anyway, don't get me wrong: I LOVE banana! And I love this blend. Also, there was plenty of real tobacco flavor in the mix, especially nuttiness from the burley. Great stuff, huh? I guess for me at least, RLP-6 drives me bananas AND nuts! Cheers. Read Less

Three Sails packs and burns with ease. Due to its thin cut and lower moisture content, the flavor strength takes no time to develop. And while this isn’t a complex smoke, it does offer up a few nuances. What I like most about Three Sails is that it presents the typical light, grassy, sweet cereal and citrus like flavors of a bright Virginia blend, only with more bravado and also a bit of spice. This is my daily smoke. When I first tried it I wasn't quite sure about it but over time it really grew on me. Virgina's out in front, cigar leaf coming in close second. I can always taste a hint of latakia but it's mildly applied. Not a hint of any added flavoring, you'll only taste pure tabacco. Easy to load and keep lit. I've never once been bit. Back in the early 80s we had a family friend in the shipping industry, who used travel the Gulf Coast from Port Arthur to Tampa, and he would bring plug-like chunks of Saint James Perique (along with packs of Picayune cigarettes!) back from his travels. That tobacco used to come in a big, pressed cake-like brick, with stems included, and we would cut it using a kitchen knife on a cutting board. Smoked it straight, or mixed with Granger Burley blend. This C&D long cut is as close to that as I have found. Plenty moist, and has the fermented scent, which always makes me think of old wood pilings in salt water. This smokes a lot smoother than I remember the raw Perique did, and seems to have less of a nicotine kick...and you dont have to pick out the stems! Bought an oz to try, and will likely get a lb next order to cellar and smoke. Been smoking this straight in a new Meer, and am thinking of trying some blending. Short of going to the source, this is the best pure Perique option available right now. Also available in a granulated cut, which may be more suited for blending...might need to get a can of Granger too! Read Less

I bought this specifically for blending as I had read that this Black Cavendish has no detectable flavoring and I couldn't agree more. It adds a smooth/creamy smoke to my blends without introducing any unwanted flavorings. This is now my "go to" Black Cavendish. I simply love this stuff! Read Less

This tobacco is unbelievable! It is a new favorite of mine. Upon initial light, it is very latakia forward, but as you smoke it, the turkish/oriental shines through and the latakia becomes more mild. This is an easy smoke with lots of sweet, fruity, nutty flavors. When I want to smoke an English blend, I often fear to do so around non-smokers because of the somewhat terrible room note. Because this is low in lat and allows the VA/oriental to shine through, I'm happy to smoke this anythime, anywhere, around anyone. Well, I came back to this now in mid July... Still holds up real well. This is an easy smoke, that is premium in terms of quality and flavor, but the price is also right to make this an everyday smoke, especially in the summer. I've found the level of latakia to be really nice, not overpowering. I would say that this is a great english blend for a beginner, and a solid one in the rotation for a seasoned smoker. Read Less

This blend is beautiful to gaze upon , with varying ribbon cuts of Virginia, deer tongue and black cavendish giving it a rich mixture of deep russet golds, leathery browns and deep matte blacks. Aromas from the bag an intoxicating mix of oat grass , pencil shavings, liquorice whips, and celery As weird as that sounds put It this way - thisbis like old style man’s reading room potpourri.

I sampled this with a new MM Huck Finn.

The virginia Is solid from draw one, and the deer tongue (which is new to me) has an oddly interesting vegetal / spiciness that I immediately want more of in my life. It made my mouth water. While I have no doubt this can bite like a Pitt bull, I take it easy - which required effort because I kept wanting to go back for more.
Second bowl was immediately packed upon kicking the firsts’ dottle and the word that popped in my head was “sophisticated “. It’s unique. It’s so damn good and tasty and unlike anything I’ve had before.
I’ve shied away from deer tongue in the past. That’s my sin to atone for. I have been neglecting glimpses of Nirvana due to my own impertinence.

How much do I like it ? I ordered a pound , on the spot , before packing a third bowl.

Third time around I detect some fruitiness in the mix. Plums. Dates. Almost something like Jordan almonds you get at the movies. And the deer tongue is the magic slicer that makes it all magical.

I will be blunt : I love this. I don’t u derstand hownit is the 11th lowest rated blend out of 101. Easy 5 for me - and can’t wait for the average 4 days it takes a box to get from Loris SC to me - I want more , NOW.

My rating : 5 - and I couldn’t wait till payday to get a pound. I had to do it now.

When I tried Creme Brulee, I was at once transported to an enchanted oasis of tranquility and repose. It was smooth but had the robust, yet gentle power of one point four billion butterfly sneezes. My faithful companion Penelope, called to me from the garden in a pert and attentive tone and inquired as to what this amazing aroma could be that was entrancing her delicate nostrils. I thought the only thing that could be more comfortable would be the slippers that would adorn the delicate feet of my queen. Upon opening the blend it smelled so enticing, that I was tempted to eat it like sweetened, shredded coconut of my youth that mother had been saving for the cake. But I refrained. I hesitated for a moment and considered to partake in bowl of salted caramel ice cream to set the stage for the smoke I was soon to enjoy, but couldn't wait a moment longer. Loading the bowl was a pleasant, tactile adventure all its own, and whilst I was tempted to lick my fingers, I thought better of it and simply used a moist towellete. It took a few seconds before I could maintain a good, consistent burn, however once lit, this magnificent blend of tabaccos stayed smouldering with little effort for a good twenty minutes and no overabundance of puffery was required to maintain the slow burn. It retained its majestic integrity like the steady gate of a jaguar loping through the forest at dusk in search of its prey. Yes, indeed, this blend will be finding its way into my Dunhill on a regular basis and Penelope will be very pleased, of this I am quite certain. Read Less

The Key to BCA is to let it ghost your pipe. The more you smoke it the more the flavor grows. For me it has gone from tasty air to a really great smoke. I have tried about all of the sweetened Black Cavs and to me this is the best. It is also the most unique as it does not have the traditional chocolate flavor that is in most, but to me has the best chocolate like flavor. I have come to smoke this blend the most and also find it awesome when mixed with other tobaccos. For a change I may mix the following 1:Add about 25% of your favorite VA especially some fresh C&D bright va with a citrus flavor. 2: Also wonderful is about 25% of your favorite vanillia ( I use C&D Green River) this is a soupy blend but awesome. 3: Another awesome favorite and addition is about 25% RLP6 from lane limited. 4: Lastly I will add a disk of Lane bullsey to equal about 25%. It seems that adding morethen 20 – 25% of another tobacco takes away from the BCA portion to much atleast to me. I have tried and love about all the tobaccos the pipe world has to offer, but these have grown to be my favorite all day smokes. Also after 30+ years of offending others by cigarettes it is really nice to hear someone say “WOW that smells GOOD” My response is that “It taste good too” ; ) Read Less

This, without a doubt, is the goopiest, moistest tobacco I have ever encountered. That said, I'm an impatient fellow and loaded the black slop into my pipe without drying. Surprisingly, it burned just fine with very little steam or goop in my pipe! It actually smoked incredibly dry and cool for how wet it was, and it produced the most smoke I've ever gotten from any tobacco. Literally clouds of white, flavorful smoke. The vanilla is present but lets the flavor of the burley tobacco shine. This is a hit for me. Read Less
