...in social situations and for both beginning and advanced pipe smokers. I say socially, because 1-Q is the quintessential pipe smoke whose aroma non-pipe smokers remember with fondness. The room note is so pleasant that anyone who complains about it is just plain being a freakish, high-minded wood tick. Good for beginners because 1-Q doesn't take a lot of fuss to enjoy. It's a good one with which to learn to pack a pipe because I've always found it easy to light and also forgiving if I don't get the pack quite right, and we do tend to learn from our mistakes where packing a pipe is concerned. And, you'll get a good Virginia tobacco flavor along with the light sweetness of the casing. Good for advanced pipe smokers too because, having worked at a local tobacconist for a couple of years after college, this was far and away our best seller to young and old pipe smokers as well as our most common ingredient in blending. It's a smooth, lightly sweet flavored tobacco without being overpowering on the tongue. That light sweetness feels natural to the tobacco too, not heavy as with some other cased products like the cherry or whiskey flavored aromatics, nothing against them. An excellent choice with which to begin your pipe smoking odyssey, and you'll likely return to it again and again as well, as one does with an old and trusted friend. P.S. My own experience was that once I wanted to expand my palate and choices, a good place to go from Lane's 1-Q was to try McClelland 2010, followed by McClelland 2000. Read Less

I wasn't sure wuite what to expect with a blend claiming 50% Latakia. I mean, I like Latakia, but would I like it THAT much? The short answer is yes! THe Lat here is very well-behaved but definitely the star of the show. Turkish (Izmir?) backs up the campfire smokiness with a cooling, floral note, while the VA comes into play infrequently for me (though I suspect I'd notice if it wasn't there to sweeten things up slightly). Packed, lit and burned perfectly. First light is all Latakia, with the Turkish coming into play part way through the bowl. Aftertaste is surprisingly clean and short-lived, and the room note is lighter and cleaner than one might expect as well. My wife is not hot on the smell of Latakia blends, but my daughter loved this one in my beard afterwards. Read Less

This is my daily smoke. When I first tried it I wasn't quite sure about it but over time it really grew on me. Virgina's out in front, cigar leaf coming in close second. I can always taste a hint of latakia but it's mildly applied. Not a hint of any added flavoring, you'll only taste pure tabacco. Easy to load and keep lit. I've never once been bit. Back in the early 80s we had a family friend in the shipping industry, who used travel the Gulf Coast from Port Arthur to Tampa, and he would bring plug-like chunks of Saint James Perique (along with packs of Picayune cigarettes!) back from his travels. That tobacco used to come in a big, pressed cake-like brick, with stems included, and we would cut it using a kitchen knife on a cutting board. Smoked it straight, or mixed with Granger Burley blend. This C&D long cut is as close to that as I have found. Plenty moist, and has the fermented scent, which always makes me think of old wood pilings in salt water. This smokes a lot smoother than I remember the raw Perique did, and seems to have less of a nicotine kick...and you dont have to pick out the stems! Bought an oz to try, and will likely get a lb next order to cellar and smoke. Been smoking this straight in a new Meer, and am thinking of trying some blending. Short of going to the source, this is the best pure Perique option available right now. Also available in a granulated cut, which may be more suited for blending...might need to get a can of Granger too! Read Less

Ok, one bowl of RLP-6 was enough to make me a fan of this blend! I know I'll need more time with it to get to really know it, but my first impressions are very favorable. Many of the other reviews of this blend mention flavors like vanilla, nougat, chocolate, and various fruit. I guess I could taste some of these things, like the vanilla, but more than anything I was tasting caramel, something rather creamy, some nuttiness, and banana. Especially banana! No kidding. Banana! I didn't see any other reviews here or elsewhere mention a banana flavor. Maybe it's just me. Banana... Hmmmm... Anyway, don't get me wrong: I LOVE banana! And I love this blend. Also, there was plenty of real tobacco flavor in the mix, especially nuttiness from the burley. Great stuff, huh? I guess for me at least, RLP-6 drives me bananas AND nuts! Cheers. Read Less

Chocolate Cavendish
Smoking Pipes Rating: 3.6

This aromatic ribbon is crafted from Virginia and has a bag aroma of chocolate - but more specifically to me like a Hershey bar , which has a distinct funk to it. It’s not a bad funk (tho I know my European friends will disagree) - it’s just how Hershey’s smells.

I sampled three bowls in a MM Missouri Pride. The samples were all uniform in color and properly dry, and unlike several of the last aros , not oily. More on that below.

So - if you’ve gotten accustomed to seeing me name and aro and then rip it apart , well, you’re gonna be dissatisfied, Old Son. This aromatic is quite tasty and I really enjoyed it. And I think I know why.

Let’s start with the bowls. So I was surprised to not instantly think it was gross. Gonna admit, the last few aros have left me gun shy. But this was very smooth, and “clean”. It reminds me a little of a Black N Mild cigar , something I enjoyed by the hundreds decades ago.

Further sampling reinforced the “honest” nature of the blend - it doesn’t present and “chemical” notes and I had an epiphany - the other aros I’ve liked seem to be Virginia dominant. The ones I dislike - black cavendish. Could not be I just don’t care for black cavendish and the toppings magnify whatever it is I don’t care for ? Hmmmm …

Then I remember - I love English Chocolate by Two friends - made by C&D. And this basically American Chocolate .

By bowl three I’m asking myself “are you really about to give a 5 to a chocolate aromatic?” And , answering myself , I was surprised to say “Yeah. I am. It tastes clean, it’s nice and tactile in the blend, the room note is aromatic but not assailing to the senses - as far as aromatics go, it’s definitely a 5 compared to the examples in the previous examples.

My rating : 5 - I’ll be buying a pound of this soon.

Bailey’s Front Porch
Smoking Pipes rated 4.1

Sampled in a MM Missouri Pride.

Typical English blend appearance with even ribbons of hues from tan to black; bag aroma includes notes of leather, saddle soak or mink oil , smoke, hay, a sense of dust. Composition is Virginia, Latakia, Perique, Burley.

I had a bit of trepidation starting back up the reviews with an English, mainly because Jase I just spent a week smoking blends that had heavy Latakia and dark fired components and I was afraid that I may not appreciate any more subtle aspects of a blend - luckily I was wrong.

By now it’s clear I’m an avowed English blend lover and this one kicks off with great notice that it’s a great example of one variant of the genre. It’s soft. Maybe some would call it an aromatic English, sometimes I see the phrase American English. Whatever you want to call it , BFP is a nice full serving of burley and Latakia , with nicely metered dosages of sweet Virginia and spicy Perique deftly applied.

It makes an oily , semi transparent smoke, and it has a nice room note. As I enjoyed a bowl with a glass of Pinot Noir, I tried to determine what image the blend evoked for me - and I settled on a nice walk through the woods on the backside of our property. It’s got a “go for a walk” kinda vibe.

Sometimes English blends leave just the tip of my tounge feeling like it’s spiced - not so much here. It’s judicious in its profile to be a clever little sipper.

My rating : 5

This English Balkan is a magical concoction of Latakia, Perique and Orientals. Presents in the bag with colors of khaki, brown, chocolatey brown, and black. Aromas from the bag are a mixture of deep smoke, oak, ketchup.

Sampled in a Missouri Pride.

This is a damn good Balkan. Immediately upon lighting it up you get a nice kick in the nuts from the Latakia telling you “hey I’m here and I run the show”.

Then the spicy Oriental and Perique go on to just beautifully pack the bowl with flavor giving you a very lush and luxurious Balkan experience.

I knew from the jump that this was going to be a five star blend and likely to see a lot of future action for me.

I actually enjoyed several bowls of this blend and can tell you that it paired nicely with a couple of red wines like The Prisoner and Meomi Pinot Noir.

It’s sweet and deep and has those nice nasal warming aromas that remind me of how wasabi kind of clears your sinuses in a flash of heat and then turn sweet on your taste buds. This blend literally made me salivate as I was smoking it.

Although I’m not saying there are anything of the same composition, this blend will easily replace White Horse as one of my go to Balkans as my supply of that blend runs out over time due to it’s no longer being produced.

If you’re a Balkan fan and you haven’t tried it I would recommend you give it a shot.

My review basically reflects GothGirls, plus/minus a couple details. Let's start at the mailbox which we're opening and sure enough. The mailbox note is what they all say it is, s'mores. It's savory, it's rich, it's deep, it's velvety and all it needs is the campfire that's kindling in your pipe chamber.

And so we throw this bush on the fire and you're 8 years old again, marshmallow ablaze at the end of a stick and your face is basically just a grin. That first 3rd of the bowl is a toasted 'mallow, sweet and fluffy with caramelized bits and I swear that virginia yeasty-ness comes through and acts the role of the graham cracker as the ember works it's way down. Did Lane plan for that? I have to assume they did. Second 3rd of the bowl and the chocolate makes it's debut both sweet and bitter, 70% dark I'd like to put it at and boy I tell you what if there ain't a damn s'more in your pipe and you're gaining weight through combusted vapor, it's basically witchcraft. The final 3rd of the bowl arrives and ngl it's my favorite part. The campfire is now smoldering and you're basically left alone with this mostly bitter but quite sweet dark chocolate and for me, for some reason, it is a very salty chocolate which makes that bittersweet delectable treat soooo very savory and my pipe stem is now steeped in drool as I suckle upon the teat of heaven.

The secret to enjoying this aromatic to the fullest, as it is with most of them, take the time to dry it till the wet gloss is gone and it has that bouncy dry feel you know what to look for with enough experience. Do that and the most mess you'll make is a slick sheen at the bottom of the bowl that can easily be wiped away. Read Less

This is quite simply the best darn smoke I’ve ever had. It's rich, sweet and creamy. The burley replaces the traditional sun-cured Orientals of English and so this has more of a toasted oats nuance rather than a verdant spice note. The Virginia sweetens the rich smoky and resinous Latakia and the cavendish is salty and smooths out any rough edges of the mixture. I've purchased pounds of this as I never tire of it and it's proven to be consistent. Constellation is the only one worth keeping in my large everyday tobacco jar. Nicotine's 2.5 on a 5 scale. This, without a doubt, is the goopiest, moistest tobacco I have ever encountered. That said, I'm an impatient fellow and loaded the black slop into my pipe without drying. Surprisingly, it burned just fine with very little steam or goop in my pipe! I'm still learning what I do and don't like about Burley blends. I've struggled to understand what others find so appealing about them for years. But by continuing to try them, I'm getting there. I'm fascinated by Burley's versatility. Able to absorb flavors, Burley is somewhat of a chameleon leaf (as in aromatic blends) and often are used in blends like a stealthy ninja (as with dark-fired Kentucky) to great effect. But without a flavoring, for me, they can range from bland to bitter. So, with straight Burley blends it's just a matter of finding the right one prepared the right way. Which brings me to this Lane Limited favorite commonly referred to as “Burley Light/Without Bite”. I can't believe I'm saying this about a Burley blend, but I have nothing bad to say about BL/WB. It's cool burning and mild in strength. It does not bite. It tastes like tobacco, not chemicals or something other than what it is. It's pleasant even. It's often compared to Lane's Ready Rubbed and I can see the similarities (I like Ready Rubbed too). It's more of a chopped cut than a ribbon and it lacks the birds-eye curls of Ready Rubbed, so it burns slightly faster. The color of this blend can only be described as “brown”, lol. It's not interesting to look at, but who cares? Other reviews mention a flavoring, but I don't get anything but a mild sweetness and a light nuttiness (less nutty than Ready Rubbed). It's not any obvious flavoring you'd usually find in an aromatic blend. It has a certain airiness to it that is pleasant in its own way and seems to get sweeter with age. I wish I could properly credit the person that came up with the phrase “unicorn farts” because BL/WB's has them. It will be unassuming one moment and then give a burst of flavor and aroma the next – now that's magical! Before I finish my review and because it is a pet peeve of mine, I have to mention that unlike many Burley blends this does not smell or taste like cigarettes, which is ultimately why I like it so much. I'd say this is an anytime smoke, especially if you're new to Burley blends or to smoking a pipe in general. I hope this helps. Read Less
