Dan Tobacco: Hamborger Veermaster 50g Pipe Tobacco

Product Number: 003-293-0015

Manufactured in a century-old brick building in picturesque Lauenburg, Germany, Dan pipe tobacco has gained quite a worldwide reputation among smokers, with a wide variety of blends and cuts on offer. Andreas Mund became the successor in charge of production when master blender Jürgen Westphal retired, and is assisted by Heiko Behrens as well as Michael Apitz of Dan Pipe.

"De Hamborger Veermaster" is a traditional German sea shanty from the mid-1800s about a four-masted ship — veermaster — from Hamburg. As a pipe mixture from Dan Tobacco, Hamborger Veermaster is a pure Virginia flake that highlights the tobacco's natural sweetness.

One of my favorites, Virginia flake with a light casing.
it is a good, high-quality, working, but not outstanding tobacco.

DTM proves with each can of tobacco that it is high-quality tobacco. And so the Hamborger Veermaster is not the star of the Virginia family. This is a simple, high quality Virginia tobacco. The Virginia flavor comes through, but not as much as I'd like. It’s certainly interesting to try it, but I didn’t put it on the list of the best tobaccos from DTM. As I wrote above, it is a good, high-quality, working, but not outstanding tobacco....Read More

I was lucky enough to receive old produced package (2008). the nicotine was considerably medium/high from my previous experience with this blend if you have it, cellar it for a year or two. I tend to find the 50 gram tin have more flavor.

I haven’t had this blend in 14yrs, & I must say this blend is 5 stars for me,I should have bought 2 bags.next time I will.. To me Veermaster taste like a lighter version of Samuel Gawith-Full Virginia Flake. I can taste the elements of F.V.F but a liter version of it-wich works for me because it’s difficult to buy FVF.& so it feels my FVF kick when I feel like smoking it....Read More

Veermaster is a mild Virginia with hints of natural sweetness and citrus. No bite, delicious sweet citrus retrohale, and great flake for beginners and experience alike.
Ok but slightly flawed

The casing is more heavy handed than I prefer. I don't hate it but I'm not sure I'll buy it again. It was fairly damp and was difficult to keep lit out of the bag. After 2 hours of drying time it was more smokable. The Virginia flavor does come through the casing but doesn't really shine as much as I'd like. If they reduced the casing I'd buy it regularly. Not that they asked me. This is a good one for aro smokers to test the water in Virginias....Read More
A Noteworthy Subtle Virginia Flake

Product: Dan Tobacco Hamborger Veermaster 250g
I was pleasantly surprised to discover how much I enjoyed this pure Virginia flake. The tactile presentation I found quite interesting which is unusual. At first glance it looked normal enough with the lighter coloring one would expect to find in an recently tinned tobacco but when I tried to peel away a layer of flake it was rather difficult to separate without damaging the slice. Almost like it had been pressed, cut, and re-pressed under extreme pressure. The moisture level was also nearly perfect as it was malleable yet firm and held together well without being sticky. Having tried many Virginia flakes over the years I found this to be unique when handling. The tin note was inviting and refined with a hay-like aroma persisting around a wonderful natural tobacco scent, with maybe a hint of vinegar though I cannot tell for certain whether it comes from a topping or fermentation, but my guess is it is a topping given the sharpness of the note. The Virginias seems to be of above average quality though not very high in sugar content. Now knowing this is a very subtle tobacco, I prefer to load these flakes either “cube-cut” or with a “fold and stuff” approach, as rubbing it out into ribbon unfocused the flavor and raised the temperature for me. I have some quite old tins of this which I have never opened, and I am now wishing I had discovered this sooner. I recommend smoking this in a pipe seasoned to Virginia tobaccos lest you run the risk of overpowering the delicate flavors this tobacco has to offer....Read More
10 year old tin

Product: Dan Tobacco Hamborger Veermaster 50g
Virginias are known for aging well, so I opened a 10 year old tin as my first experience with this tobacco. Even with 10 years, the taste was VERY mild and did not taste aged. It was a darn good, well behaved smoke. The flavor was very subtle. Not a bad thing, but if you’re expecting it to get vastly better with age, you might be disappointed. I have a few more fresh tins and will enjoy them sooner instead of waiting. This is a great, reliable tobacco, but subtlety is the keyword. Not for lovers of big, bold taste…but an unobtrusive companion when you want to puff on something nice....Read More
Hamburger Beermaster?

Product: Dan Tobacco Hamborger Veermaster 50g
Good smooth VA flake, a little sweeter than most but not overly. The SP description says it comes as a broken flake but the flakes are more or less intact. Fold and stuff aficionados rejoice! Not sure if I've got some older stock but mine came out of the tin in a sort of crystalized block. Goes good with burgers and beer too, but then again what doesn't?...Read More

Surprisingly sweet Virginia, full body, creamy and yummy! Waiting for it to be restocked so I can purchase several more bags, it can only get better with age!
