About This Pipe Tobacco

A blend of bright Virginia flake, white Burley, chopped cigar leaf, and a touch of Perique, Billy Budd Blonde is a sweet sequel to the blend originally created for C&D's late friend Sailorman Jack.

I love the original Billy Budd so I had to try this. I’m glad I did. I think C&D accomplished what they sought out to do with this blend. It is a Virginia / burley / cigar blend strong in flavor, no Latakia, that has hints of the original Billy Budd. Can’t think of a better name to give it than Billy Budd Blonde. This ribbon cut Virginia smells of leather, whisky vanilla, oak and faint smoke. It was a u inform cut and color , reminding me of old pine straw. (Not an insult).

This blend is Virginia sweet and burley strong. I couldn’t ever really find the Perique - and barely the cigar leaf. It’s more like they magically cancelled each other out, leaving the Virginia sweetness unchecked and the burley as the boiler driving the train.

For a VA, it does have a nice room note , and you get the expected burley induced large cottony smoke. I never quite got impressed with this blend - it’s just “meh”. More bland than blend , if you will.

It smokes a bit hot - pushing it will get you ashes and acrid taste quick.

I noted that I tasted “almost” - as in “almost good”. The sweet side is just too overpowering for the blend when I look at the composition. It’s prettier than it smokes.

To be fair it’s not “bad” - I just think it’s rather boring.

My (modified) rating : 3- this is good (well, Its not bad) - I’d would only buy it on sale Or to get free shipping in an order

This is a fantastic burley forward blend. Brings deep burley notes, backed up and enhanced by the cigar leaf. If you are a cigar smoker looking to experience a pipe tobacco while providing you with some familiar ground this is your ticket. I started smoking cigars before taking up the pipe and wish I had known about this blend sooner. The Virginia and perique seem like background players that balance the deep earthy, chocolate, and malty flavors from the burley/cigar combo. I wish they would have named this something besides "Billy Budd." It has very little in common with the original BB. Generally, the Virginia and Perique are what stand out, with an occasional light cigar taste that comes and goes and the burleys add a rough edge from time to time. It's not bad, but a bit disappointing when expecting a lighter form of BB. I think a dab of unsweetened Cavendish would make this blend better by mellowing some of the rough edges. I'm going to jar it up and give it a few months to see if the flavors come together a bit and I it smoothes out with age. I'll update the review if things change significantly....Read More
